Chrome Beta Update 4.0: With Bookmarks Sync But No Extensions

by Chrome Blog on November 3, 2009

The Beta Channel of Google Chrome has been finally updated to 4.0.223.16  which is the 4.0 release in Beta.  Some of the notable changes in this release has been the inclusion of Bookmarks Sync feature along with several other speed enhancements.

Bookmarks Sync Feature

Like we already have in Developer builds, Bookmarks Sync allows users to sync their bookmarks across multiple computers. To enable Bookmarks Sync feature on your Google Chrome browser you will need to download the latest Beta Build of Google Chrome from here and follow the instructions or you can see the video below.

More Speed & Improved Performance

One of the prime factors for users shifting from other browsers to Google Chrome was its simplicity and speed. This seems to have got a further boost with this Beta release. The Beta 4.0.223.16 improves speed and performance by 30% over the current Stable release over 400% since the very first stable release.

Extensions Dissapointments

Even though the Bookmarks Sync is the most notable addition to the Beta release, Google  has still not debuted Extensions support on Beta builds yet. Their post stated :

Extensions are disabled until the final API changes arrive.  Please use the dev channel for the latest extension API.

So i guess it would not be a long time before we see extensions in beta builds of Chrome as well.

Not entirely true regarding extensions. Dropping a .crx file onto Chrome (or downloading one) gives an error yes, but the chrome://extensions page shows a trio of buttons to “load unpacked extension”, “pack extension” and “Update extension now”. Using the former and navigating to the C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions\cd…ie\1.2.10 directory where Chrome had previously unpacked the flashblock extension loaded it and it worked just fine on the flash games at Facebook.

PS Navigating to the unpacked folders with explorer and pasting the path into the extension directory/load dialog make the process so much faster :)

Gible: that only works until you close chrome, then you have to load the extensions again.

Terrible.

I can’t even find the Extensions folder in . Anyway, what’s that flag you have to add to the Chrome shortcut goal? first a space, or two spaces, and then [--enable-extensions] or [-enableextensions] or [-enable-extensions]?

None of them seem to work on the current Chrome Beta channel version, 4.0. Maybe by “Extensions are disabled” they don’t just mean ‘not enabled’, but literally blocked?

Why Chrome Browser has no support on actual color management as Firefox or Safari? This is an important feature for photographers all over the world. Hope to see Chrome support on this soon.
