Google has finally decided to bring an end to its Gears plug-in. The search engine giant has finally decided to remove the software from
its Chrome Browser. In a blog post by Aaron Boodman, a member of Gears team has declared that there will be no new Gears releases. Gears will be removed from Chrome in Chrome 12. It is to be noted that Gears was launched by Google amidst much buzz in 2007. One of the great features of Gears was its ability to get web apps work offline when the network connection was slow.
Most Web Browsers Providing Functionality Of Gears
It is to be noted that the functionality which was provided by Gears is now available in most of the web browsers. Moreover, Google has implemented application caches which enables running of web apps even when a user is offline. Moreover the browser landscape has changed much since 2007.
With Google having its own Chrome Browser, which has gained immense popularity in the last couple of years, Google has got the much needed platform to bring its own web features in the market. Google has also rapidly come out with several versions of the browser. The hint for the end of Gears was reflected in December 2009, when Google talked of its preference of HTML5 standards over Gears. With the availability of APIs for geo-location, notification and several other things in Chrome, functionality of Gears have been pretty much diminished.
