Google has finally added their highly talked about Bookmarks Synchronization feature to Google Chrome’s developer channel. It was first announced on the Chromium Developers Group a couple of weeks back. This feature is available only on the developer builds and not on the stable and beta channels. This feature allows users to synchronize their bookmarks to Google’s servers using Google Account and access it from other multiple computers.
As was announced earlier, it uses Google Docs to store the bookmarks and are then transfered to the Google’s servers using XMPP protocol. If you are using multiple computers, then any changes made on one machine will be done to the other as well in real time.
How To Enable Bookmarks Sync?
- You must first ensure that you are on the latest developer build of google chrome.
- Add “––enable-sync” to your Chrome command line by right clicking on Chrome application shortcut; click on ok, and restart Chrome again.
- Click on the “Wrench” icon, there you will find an option “Sync my bookmarks”, clicking on it will open a Google Account Sign-in box, just sign-in with your account and thats it.
- Your bookmarks would be synchronized immediately and would be available for viewing in Google Docs.
All these things seems to be pretty neat though i strongly feel its now time the developers remove the “command lines” to enable extensions, userscripts and now sync as soon as they can. It all looks bit too “primitive”.

And what about the Linux version?
works like a charm!!!
Too bad Google Docs is blocked in many places I could use my home bookmarks….
I dont understand what you mean by right-click & click ok on the application shortcut. It dont get this option, just the normal windows.
you have to put the command line in the shortcut, and apply the changes and ok to exit the window and then restart google chrome.
When i add the ––enable-sync option Chrome try’s to open the option as a url (http://xn--enable-sync-lg3fa/).
My version is 4.0.202.0
hi paulo, i have added a screenshot of the process. Please refer there.. Its the same as you would –enable-extensions, jst replace extensions with sync and you are done.
You can see this screenshot of what happens when i run “chrome.exe –enable-sync” from a command line shell.
With the –enable-extensions option gives the same error (url = http://xn--enable-extensions-802ja/)
the command line has 2 dashes:
c h r o m e . e x e – - e n a b l e – s y n c
yeah it has 2 dashes, as written above..
Sorry if i wasn’t clear about my post.
I wanted to say that i write it with 2 dashes, and not with 1 as appeared in the post #8.
It continues to give error as in the screenshot.
I think i will open a thread in the forum about this, maybe its a better place.
Anyone have an idea when this will be available on linux dev builds?
To Paulo: aren’ t you using Chromium not Chrome? It seems that Chromium doesn’t support Sync feature. I tried it with Chromium 4.0.202. and Chrome 4.0.201., teh last worked well. Before topw dashes one space to be put of course.
by drag n drop from site the command line –enable-sync I get the same error. Is this possible we have different keybords and on site one – (minus/dash) sign is slight different? I typed it on keyboard and it works now.
It does not work on latest build for Linux. Version 4.0.202.2
@Paulo,
Are you behind a proxy?
In case you are, try to connect to the internet directly without a proxy.
Paulo
Is you problem resolved? I am facing the exact same problem
My version is also 4.0.202.0 in windows XP
I am wondering how it is working for others…
It does not work when the flag –proxy-server= is set.
It does work with direct connections to the internet
Hai,
I installed chrome. But when use sending a mail with an attachment from g mail,it is getting stuck and an error was occurring. The error states as the “shockwave flash plug-in has crashed”. If any one know the solution ,let me know.
I already installed/used the “–enable-sync”in Google chrome but what if I want to use multiple? Like I also have “–enable-extensions” but chrome won’t let me use both at the same time (ex. “–enable-sync-extensions”??) Is there a correct format for that??
Per Roma
–enable-extensions –enable-sync
cosi funziona!
When I try connecting to Bookmark Sync I got “Username and password do not match.”, but I enter my email&password correctly.
May you help?
Works really well , wanted to know when will they enable syncing with google.com/bookmarks ?
It doesn’t work under proxy, is there any opinion when will it be released a working type of this feature?
For ShoDan
I had the same problem. Solved by writting a space betwween “ex”e and “–”
Yves
C:\Users\Yves\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe –enable-sync
apparently the bookmark sync doesn’t work if you’re behind a proxy.
the issue is known as 19581 in chrome’s bug database : http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=19581
Thanks for the tip! Still doesn’t seem to work yet in the (bi-)weekly unstable Linux releases.
@Al: if I were you, I wouldn’t even try to get this working, seeing as you lack basic computer usage skills… No offense intended, but you’ll probably take offense anyway.
I had it working, then I uninstalled it because I ran into a glitch. When I re-installed it and did the “–enable-sync” thing, it doesn’t recognize it as a program and asks me what I want to open the file with.
I’m running Chrome 4.0, and this is starting to get really annoying.
PLZ HELP!
I was having trouble with this same error. Based on a suggestion above, I went back in and reedited my target line. It seems that when I copied and pasted the line from the web, my computer was treating the –’s as —-’s ( 2 and 4 dashes) So I just deleted the copied dashes in my Properies an simply reentered the — and I no longer am getting the error.
I am using a mac, with both chrome and chromium. I can’t find a way to launch the one or the other with –enable-sync.
Any idea on how to enable bookmarks sync on MAC 10.6?
Nice feature though I do not understand why they will build one more new feature. What about the bookmarks from google toolbar. They can at least import those automatically as a start so we don’t make a mess alter.
Why not use the Google Bookmarks service….
The service at http://www.google.com/bookmarks should be used instead of docs that does not allow us to add
Google has already a place to store our bookmarks with comments and labels that are relevant to the target url. There are also Gadgets for iGoogle and Google Desktop and Google Sites.
So I really do not understand why Google Docs was the choice for storage without label/comments.
Reading is an acquired skill. ,
This is a very innovative step by Chrome Lab, I have exported all my bookmarks to my othter computer.
Chrome is expanding its reach by adding new features in its gallery though it is far away from Firefox
in terms of addons.
Hi!
I’ve read through the text, and I have a different problem. I’ve started ubuntu with –enable-extensions –enable-sync, but the sync my bookmarks option is dark, which means I cannot select it.
Why is this?
Is there anyway to synch bookmarks from a PC running 4.0.223.16 and a mac running 4.0.249.4 ? (These are the latest versions as of nov 24/09 if im not mistaken) This is the feature im really looking for, to keep my bookmarks synched between my pc and macbook pro
You can export the Bookmarks from Google.com/bookmarks and import them in the Google Docs area….
This sync is terrible bugged, when I delete or rename an item and open the browser on a outdated PC they don’t delete the old item, just reinsert the old one!
