Important Announcement Chrome V 3.0.189.0: For Extensions Users And Developers

by Chrome Blog on June 18, 2009

Today the Dev Channel was updated to Version 3.0.189.0, and with this release there have been some breaking changes in the way Google Chrome installs an extension. As per the release in the chromium blog, there have been some changes in the CRX format. These changes would add a signature to the package format and thus would enable the automatic updates of the extensions just like in firefox.

However, since its the dev channel, we expect to loose something as well. With these changes, as soon as your Google Chrome is updated to V 3.0.189.0, all the existing extensions would stop working and would have to be repackaged.

So what to do now?

If you Developed any Extension : You can learn how to repackage it in order to get it working for Chrome 3.0.189.0 by reading the packaging doc. It would give you an extension ID which is going to be your public key, so you will have to change any codes that might be using that.

If You Got Any Extension Installed On Your Browser : In order to make it work again in Chrome 3.0.189.0, you will have to reinstall the extension once the developer of that extension has repackaged it as per the new standards.

Extensions Working on Chrome 3.0.189.0

Since our website has launched and featured a lot of extensions earlier as you can see, many of those are not yet repackaged by their developers. However the following extensions have been repackaged and are working for Google Chrome 3.0.189.0 :

Custom New Tab Extension

Aniweather Extension

Chrome Sticky Notes Extension

Extensible Video Downloader

DblClickDial Extension

Cleeki

Element Hider

Tree View Object Browser

As soon as other developers update their extensions and repackaging them, the download links and extension’s posts would be updated.

With these breaking changes in the extensions platform for the Dev Channel, one can hope that extensions are not too far away from being supported by the Stable and Beta channels as well.

Also, if you are a dev, there’s a new google group http://groups.google.com/group/chromium-extensions

Not sure if this was the best idea… it looks like Adsweep might not get fixed (www.adsweep.org indicates that the extension won’t be supported any longer) and the Flashblock plugin hasn’t been updated either. We really need something like NoScript ported in which case neither of these would be needed.

I know people will say that you really shouldn’t need these extensions but they make Chrome much more usable in my view.

Adsweep was updated one last time.

As for NoScript, you can add –disable-javascript as a command line argument to your shortcut.

I updated AdSweep and emailed them, but no one replied (it’s contact@adsweep.org, right?). If someone wants, I can post an updated version. Or did they fix it on the website already? Hopefully so, but I’m not sure so I did it myself.

Oh and for anyone who wants to know how to do this, just rename the extension’s filetype to .rar and open with winrar. extract and follow the instructions at http://dev.chromium.org/developers/design-documents/extensions/packaging and you’re good to go.

Adsweep still works, looks like he did the last update and quite, at least its open source and somebody could possibly take over and improve it

8 Kyrax 06.19.09 at 7:10 am

Javier. It’s –enable-extensions, not –eneable-extensions

9 Stamga 06.19.09 at 11:14 am

And there’s 2 hyphens in front of enable-extensions.

For some reason, the blog regroups both hyphens to make one…

Ye snow its work sorry! and thanks!

When is Adblock + going to be working again?

12 Stamga 06.20.09 at 9:15 am

Why would you want Adblock when you have AdSweep?
AdSweep’s version is compatible with the latest version of Chrome.

13 Arley 06.20.09 at 3:33 pm

Didn’t you hear that the owner of Adsweep in no longer going to make updates for Adsweep and by the way AdSweep in not even close in being ass good as Adblock Plus.

14 Stamga 06.20.09 at 8:52 pm

Yes, I know. But it is still compatible with the latest Chrome versions. Why do you find Adblock better?

15 sulasno 06.21.09 at 2:54 am

There is an update to Cleeki

16 Fathermocker 06.30.09 at 3:19 am

Can anyone post the updated versions they have developed?

17 Chrome Blog 06.30.09 at 5:19 am

I have updated the list with a few more extensions. I am awaiting the developers of Googlepedia extension and the DblClickDial Extension to update their work.
