Looking Back: Happy Birthday To Google Chrome & ChromePlugins.org

by Chrome Blog on September 2, 2009

Today is September 2 2009, exactly 1 year ago on 2nd Sep 2008, Google dropped a bombshell on Firefox and Internet Explorer by going into a browser battle with Google Chrome. Now exactly after 1 year there have been a lot of improvements and news and rumours regarding Google Chrome.

Let me sum up the entire year for you guys. Where to begin? Well ofcourse with the start of Google Chrome, as soon as Google announced its entry into the browser market i knew we are onto something big. Being a big fan of almost all google products i thought why not make a google chrome community and hence ChromePlugins.org was launched.

Chrome Being the Fastest & Lightest Browser

People started to talk about this new browser and was given the title of “Fastest Browser”, “Lightest Browser” by many rating agencies and it has still been able to keep these titlesto itself. Most of the internet users who have switched to Chrome are those who are Google Fanatics (like me) and those who want a faster browsing as compared to other alternatives. The lack of extensions was a major factor affecting Google Chrome in a negative way but in March this year Google finally started supporting extensions. Ever since there has been a significant number of extension released at our forum.

Themes Gallery & Now Extensions Gallery In The Making

We had a lot of 3rd party themes and skins available for Google Chrome which was “not official” nor themes were officially supported by Google Chrome, but perhaps due to a large amount of requests received by Google they eventually started supporting themes and even released an “Official Themes Gallery” ahead of their planned Extensions Gallery. As per a post on our forum, we can safely assume that they would be releasing an Extensions Gallery very soon in near future.

In one year, Google Chrome has leaped forward to version 4, Google Chrome 4, now thats a very fast pace of development, Firefox is still at 3.5.  I guess we should reach Google Chrome 10 pretty soon around next year on its 2nd birthday?

Google Chrome Operating System

In july 2009, Google dropped another bomb on Microsoft by announcing Google Chrome OS, an operating system to take the battle to Microsoft Windows on the clouds. It being dubbed as “Cloud OS” for being an operating system which would be based on cloud computing and everything would operate from the Google Chrome Browser. There are lots of rumours and speculations about leaked Google OS images, and rumoured unconfirmed feature lists and all, but we at ChromePlugins.org are not going into that speculative business. Though i can confirm, that Google has started approacing Notebook makers to get them to help and distribute this Google Chrome OS. Its scheduled to be released sometime in the middle-end of 2010.

One step towards cloud operating system was taken a few weeks back when Google Chrome started Bookmarks Sync using Google Accounts. You can take your bookmarks accross multiple computers – a feature cloud os feature.

Google Chrome Promotions & Commercial Tie-ups

Google Chrome is the only product from Google which was marketed and promoted really aggressively by them accross all major platforms. Be it with TV Commercials, or Youtube, banners ads using adsense accross a variety of websites (including ours), to promoting it on their homepage google.com, they did everything. A trend which Microsoft also followed when they launched their new search engine Bing.

A big shot in the amour came in yesterday when Sony confirmed, it would now be selling its Sony VAIO laptops in the US with Google Chrome Browser as their default browser.  This is sure to give Microsoft and Firefox nightmares. There are already talks going on with other manufacturers like Dell as confirmed by Google.

I am sure we are going to hear a lot more about Google Chrome and Chrome OS as Google tries to overtake the present market leaders in both these fields. We at ChromePlugins.org would be bringing in more useful resources about Chrome to the forefront and your comments are appreciated.

Happy Birthday!!

“Google dropped a bombshell on Firefox and Internet Explorer”

I’ve never seen such a wildly biased and inaccurate article. It started badly, got worse in the middle, and the less said about the ending the better.

Also, read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SRWare_Iron

Happy Bday to Chrome and to Chrome Plugins!

I love this community and I’m proud to be part of it and to share my themes.

alec, i think you are right that the article is ‘somewhat’ biased, but hey isnt this a google chrome fans website? The developers at this community are spending hours and hours taking user queries and developing extensions and themes, and at the same time i noticed that this blog does not promote or post rumours which is very wasy to do..

The article above maybe biased and favouring chrome, but its not “untrue”, the post is quite factual.

Happy birthday to google chrome. Waiting for a better browser.

You’d think that Chrome was wildly successful from the article – it may be good but it hasn’t really got much of a market share. Far from trying to overtake the market leaders, it’s struggling to overtake the market also-rans, like Safari. Oh, and “shot in the amour” conjures up some really strange images. I suspect it’s not what you wanted to convey.
