While Chrome OS looks forward to challenge the dominance of Microsoft in the OS segment, it itself can face a challenge from a new
competitor. Mozilla Labs has showcased a new browser slanting UI for desktops and laptops which is being seen as a competitor to Chrome OS. The new software is being dubbed as Webian Shell and it is a full screen web browser for devices where desktop is not necessary to carry out operations. The platform allows users to access the web and perform tasks using web apps.
Open Source Software
Webian Shell is an open source software which has been devised on technologies and standards such which incorporates CSS, JavaScript and CSS. In a recent post on the Mozilla Lab site, developer Ben Francis said that this is an early prototype which offers full-screen tabbed web browser. With time the software will include several home screens, hardware controls, split-screen capabilities and on screen keyboard.
There are some differences regarding Webian Shell and Chrome OS. While users require to have a Google account to use a Chrome OS device, Mozilla aims to develop an ecosystem where anyone can run an app store or vendors may simply host their own installed app.
