Request Your Most Wanted Extensions, Plugins & Addons For Chrome

by Chrome Blog on June 16, 2009

This week has been a bit low for our community. There were no new plugins released by our forum members in last few days. Our website also underwent a change in servers and as a result you might have been seeing some error while accessing it.

Chrome Plugins

I am taking this opportunity, to ask the general users of Google Chrome Browser to list their top 3 most wanted extensions, plugins and addons which they want to see in Google Chrome. We would forward the request to all the plugins developers who frequent our Chrome Forum. I am sure that with the limited support for extensions yet in chrome, developers would still be able to get some of the requests fulfilled.

What i Want Personally :

  1. Google Toolbar
  2. Ad Blocker (we already got that)
  3. DownloadThemAll Extension which is in Firefox

So guys, just put your requests in comments below. I am sure that even the Google Chrome Development Team would be having an eye on this.

Hands down for me would be “open in IE Tab” for M$ sites and those sites that still insist I use at worse IE or at best FireFox

10 Chrome Blog 06.16.09 at 4:27 am

@akhxp and Raimondas : we already have the adblock plus extension, you can download it from here: http://www.chromeplugins.org/google/chrome-plugins/adblock-7523.html

1. google bookmarks synchronization
2. download video from youtube and/or other similar sites
3. some tools to tweak css effects, like Aardvark for firefox (http://karmatics.com/aardvark/)

btw, you can get some level of download integration support by using Orbit Downloader (http://www.orbitdownloader.com)

1. I’d like to have an extension similar to FF Download Statusbar . It would be nice to have all my downloads at the same bar as gmail, google reader… and not at an extra floating bar.

2. Reload Every – reload page every X seconds/minutes

3.All-in-one sidebar

1, PasswordMaker (http://passwordmaker.org/)
2, XMarks (or anything to automaticaly synchronize bookmarks, really)
3, Mouse gestures (I’m using tablet instead of a mouse)

@Those requesting adblock
The link provide by Chrome Blog is to something SIMILAR to adblock+. As Chrome grows and develops I’m sure it will be updated to include more of the adblock+ features.

@Those requesting Mouse Gestures
It’s currently being discussed and is likely to grow as well.
http://www.chromeplugins.org/google/chrome-plugins/mouse-gesture-userscript-7466.html

@akhxp
Chrome automatically offers an option to restore session if it crashes. If you accidentally close out tabs you can use CTRL+SHIFT+T to reopen up to 20 of the last closed out tabs (until you close out the browser). Perhaps that will help you until a plugin a developed.

@Tomas Sedovic
Check out SuperGenPass: http://supergenpass.com/
It’s a bookmarklet that uses the same type of algorithm as passwordmaker.

@对啊博客
As for nofollow information, I use a simple bookmarklet found on this page: http://johnmu.com/seeing-nofollow-links-in-google-chrome/

@Those who want delicious (or a means of bookmarking cross platform/browser)
This can be done via bookmarklet for now. Read more at: http://delicious.com/help/bookmarklets

The following firefox addons are very helpful. I use them a lot. As soon as they are available for chrome I will make chrome my No. One browser:
1. DownloadHelper (the best browser-integrated video-download-tool I know).
2. Free Download Manager Plugin (the best download manager I know).
3. Google Preview (screenshots of all the websites appear in front of the search results).
4. McAfee Site Advisor (a red, yellow or green sign shows which websites (search results in google) are dangerous).
5. Tab Mix Plus (It should be possible to open new tabs rather than overwriting existing ones by clicking on a link or bookmark).
6. Search Webpage (you write down 1, 2 or even more words and all these words are marked in different colours if they are on a webpage. At the moment chrome can only deal with one word at a time).

Do you think the chrome people can manage that?

26 Keith 06.16.09 at 11:20 am

StumbleUpon PLUGIN for Chrome! Using the bookmarklets is a pain.

27 Kyrax 06.16.09 at 11:52 am

The current javascript console is quite powerful ( CTRL+SHIFT+J ).. So I don’t need Firebug on Chrome..

However, I’d like :
1 ) More Mouse Gestures,
2 ) A notebook that allows you to write down notes as you surf the web
3 ) Something that allows you to see in a pretty way xml files in the browser (IE does that) .. same with rss feeds ( Firefox does that )

28 Kyrax 06.16.09 at 11:54 am

Also, what kind of feature from the google toolbar is everyone interested in ?

You can already easily search google using the omni bar,
You already get site suggestions on 404…

What specific feature are you looking for ?

29 Betty 06.16.09 at 12:10 pm

1. Xmarks (Sync bookmarks and PASSWORDS)
2. Adblock Plus (much better than Adsweep)
3. Add to Search Bar ( Add ANY search field from any website)
4. MouseGestures (no need for description….)

34 Rndmerle 06.16.09 at 12:57 pm

Hi.

1. Firebug!
2. Aardvark clone (allow to remove elements in a page)
2. a bookmarks/passwords sync system (Xmarks or other)

35 Nick 06.16.09 at 1:19 pm

I have not put alot of thought into this yet. But I always wish that Chrome would have an option to save tabs, like in Firefox.

36 Peter 06.16.09 at 2:36 pm

1. noscript
2. speed dial
3. reminderfox
4. gbutts
5. forecastfox
6. calculator

37 Peter 06.16.09 at 2:39 pm

7. Cooliris
8. Toolbarbuttons

38 Kyrax 06.16.09 at 2:56 pm

Everyone stop asking for a Greasmonkey extension.
Chrome already supports this. It’s called UserScripts and it comes with Chrome right out of the box.

http://www.chromeplugins.org/tips-tricks/installing-userscripts-on-chrome/

39 Kyrax 06.16.09 at 2:57 pm

Most requested extensions are already supported.
You can already add any search bar from any website in Chrome.
You can already disable Javascript in Chrome.
There is already a speeddial in Chrome.
There is already a GMail notifier extension.
There is already a Weather extension.

40 Peter 06.16.09 at 4:07 pm

With speed dial is not meant the New Tab thumbnails as do exist in Chrome but the speed dial plugin of Firefox that is much more powerful.

Speed dial thumbnails at start up of the browser with configurable rows and columns, organized in groups (defined by the user), with fixed URL’s chosen by the user (his often visited webpages)

Best regards,

Peter

41 Peter 06.16.09 at 4:15 pm

Could you send us the link where it is explained how to disable javascript (except that of the webdomain that the user visited) such as what noscript can do, please ? I would be very interested.

The Aniweather extension is very good but it would be nice if the forecast for the coming days is permanently visible to the user.

Do you have the link to the GMAIL Notifier extension ? Thank you.

42 Felix Duirand 06.16.09 at 4:24 pm

Firegestures (mouse gestures used to navigate through tabs)
tab mix plus
Flashblock

43 Atlos 06.16.09 at 4:39 pm

1. Google Toolbar
2. Facebook Toolbar
3. SpeedDial (the google dial have small previews, and i dont like it (my resolution is 1280×1024). SpeedDial have big previews)

44 Kyrax 06.16.09 at 9:08 pm

Disabling javascript : http://nethead.blogspot.com/2008/09/google-chrome-how-to-disable-javascript.html

Thanks for giving me more info about your speed dial needs, I’ll look into it for the next version of customnewtab ( http://code.google.com/p/customnewtab/ )

The GMail extension I was referring to is GMail Checker : http://dev.chromium.org/developers/design-documents/extensions/samples

I hope this helps,
If you have more specific requests, feel free to drop by our forums. Devs are more than happy to help :)

Mouse Gestures!!

46 Robb Thurston 06.16.09 at 11:16 pm

This is important. I need two things very much: (1) the extensions must be totally and unconditionally compatible with SRWare Iron browser, which I am now writing on; (2) the download process for extensions at present presume a high level of cleverness or technical competence. Please provide an application which precludes these requirements. Hypothesis, it is called ChromeExtender. Thus, I want to add a greasemonkey script, I place its name in ChromeExtender and download it. Done! Do something form us dullards!

47 hewligun 06.16.09 at 11:44 pm

1) Adblock Plus
2) Greasemonkey
3) Webmail notifier (exactly like the one below)
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4490

48 Waha 06.17.09 at 12:11 am
49 Alphega 06.17.09 at 2:15 am

1) AdBlock (one for which I can enter exceptions when it blocks stuff I need by accident)
2) Cookie manager (like Cookieculler for firefox)

50 Abbas 06.17.09 at 3:11 am

Would like to have all the plugins mentioned above and the AI Roboform as well then i will switch from Firefox to Chrome for sure :D

51 Peter 06.17.09 at 3:33 am

Thank you Kyrax for the information. It is very useful. It would be good if there would be an “import-capability” of some excellent already existing plugins for Firefox. Also a plugin/extension/add-on capability of Google Picasa would be a very good thing to have. Yes, I should be more active in the developer forum.

Regards,

Peter

52 Peter 06.17.09 at 4:38 am

Hello Kyrax,

I have the CustomNewTab extension installed. It has very useful possibilities that users want. It would be good that in the redirect option:
The user can also choose to have an array of configurable thumbnails (more than 3×3) of webpages he always want to visit. Clicking on a thumbnail opens this URL in a new tab. Closing the tab goes back to the thumbnailpage. (a little bit like TopSites in Safari).

Best regards,

Peter

53 Patrick 06.17.09 at 4:38 am

google bookmark manager
download manager
video/music downloader

54 Peter 06.17.09 at 4:49 am

Hello Kyrax,

I have the CustomNewTab extension installed. It has a lot of features users want. It would be good additionally to have a redirect option where the users can specify a number of URL’s he/she frequently visits (more than 3×3) and the new tab page would then display an array/matrix of these URL’s as thumbnails. if the user clicks on the thumbnail the URL would open in the Tab.

Best regards,
Peter

Session Manager – not only restoring sessions at startup, but being able to load/save window sets is key. I love that in Chrome I can have 18 windows open, each with 10+ tabs open. But then I need to restart, and this can take a long time. Imagine needing documentation on ten different tasks that I have going on at the same time… I need the documentation grouped into different windows, but I don’t need all of it open right now. Some tasks I can start on today, but need to follow up in a few days, so I don’t need that documentation set now, but later.
Synchronization with Google-bookmarks service. Thanks to the FF extensions, I had all my bookmarks in there. While I can upsync into Chrome, it would be nice to down-sync again (into Google-bookmarks). Better yet: seamless integration.
External form editor. I’m a vi freak; enough said.
Something to block Flash videos from automatically playing on page-load

Peter, this is something that I have planned.. however the problem is that right now it is quite clumsy for extensions to store data client side ( such as configurations ) ..

Before I release more features, I’d like to have a much more simple ” save config ” button (instead of copy pasting xml around)

58 Tom Dierkes 06.17.09 at 7:13 am

I rely upon a plugin from LogMeIn.com for a variety of things. If I could get LogMeIn to run inside Chrome as an Application, with it’s minimal border, I could multi task mucho better than I do now.

Firefox and IE sometimes forget that Content is king and not the 2″ and 1/2″ on top and bottom devoted to THEIR App.

If you know anything about LogMeIn, you can probably guess I am hoping I can avoid going full screen so I can switch btw local applications and the remote applications more quickly.

would it be possible to have a plugin where you can change the shortkeys?

as in instead of having to use ctrl+1 to get to the next tab, for there to be the ability to change this for how it works in Opera? making it easier for certain games were you can hit enter 2 enter 2 enter 2, the 2 depicting the tab and the enter depicting the action needed on the page.

i’d like to see in Chrome these extensions
1. AdBlock – it’s very good news, that team makes it now

2.Mouse gestures, like in Opera and like many of them, made by Fierfox extensions

3.Download manager, like FlashGot

4.Something like TabMix Plus, to manage opening\closing, positioning, etc manipulations with tabs

But anyway, Chrome is a great thing, when there will be some extensions, i’ll migrate on it from FireFox

79 Mauro 06.23.09 at 8:53 am

I’d like to see in Chrome an extension to remember page zoom level on a per site basis. This feature is a must for people with high resolution monitors (i.e. 1920×1080). Without this extension they have to press CTRL+’+’ on every new tab opened (really frustrating).
Thanks.

– paste, in a Google document, the icon with the URL as an attached link followed by the selected text and images; also with just one command.

Not strictly speaking an extension, but perhaps extendable:

- ‘live bookmarks’ as per FF. I’m using my igoogle page at the moment to keep on top of my feeds and find it functional, but FF’s live bookmarks remain my favourite implementation.

-An easy point’n'click method of installing such extensions as do exist! I’m still seeing instructions that require the use of the command line – in *Windows*! Now I’ve spent long enough with Linux to not be completely intimidated by it, but it’s still not first nature and really, with the resources Google has, we should have access to plugins and extensions that install just as easily as they do in FF.

-Safari4 style coverflow for bookmarks and history.

-Xmarks.

Otherwise, this is my favourite browser. Although, I’d like an extension to show a menu bar – there are times when not being able to hit File ->Open to open a .html file from within Chrome is a nuisance. I know I can do it via right click in Explorer, but I shouldn’t have to. A toggable menu bar as per Safari 4 would do the trick.

93 indireneed 06.28.09 at 9:43 pm

A plugin that saves all the tabs u have open, so that they do not necessarily open up the next time you open chrome… and you can choose which set of tabs to open the next time the browser opens…

94 Pokpong 06.28.09 at 9:55 pm

Side tab is wonderful plug in. Specially for wide screen.
I though all browner should be possible to customer position of tab.
I will improve both cosmetic and utilize of monitor.

Thanks,

95 Robert 06.29.09 at 4:44 pm

I would love ROBOFORM and as soon as you add it I too will switch over from FF.
Also the ability like I can with FF to simply click on the right of the current tab to add another 1.
I also love how IE groups together tabs by color.
I have a gmail email address so does that mean us gmail users get higher priority with our requests?
;)
I also have the G1 so my request should get super duper top priority code red consideration!

2. Gmail Manager

Tree Style Tab (one word: tvtropes)
Gresemonkey (to be able to set the order in which user scripts run, and to temporarily enable/disable some)
Adblock Plus (to complement adsweep)

146 zoechi 08.27.09 at 6:45 am

Could’nt live without these Firefox addons:
TreeStyleTab (tabs on the left in a partially collapsable tree structure)
Flashblock
IETab
Zotero
DownThemAll!
Resizeable Textarea (or alternatively enlarge the comment textarea in blogspot ;-) )

Lock Tabs (prevent closing)
don’t show close-Icon [x] on tabs
(I think these two are features from TabMix Plus)

and nice to have:
CheckYesss
Colorful Tabs

147 Deacon 09.01.09 at 4:11 am

Vimperator definitely. Does anybody know of something similar for Chromium?

148 Cordaro 09.10.09 at 12:48 pm

FAYT – Find As You Type

This feature is so incredibly useful in Firefox. It functions like the “find” or F3 feature, but it is automatic. I type on whatever website and all instances of what I type are immediately highlight in real time. If I hit enter, I’m taken to the web link I highlighted. Please add this feature! You will convert many from Firefox to Chrome this way.

An EXIF viewer like photoinfo on firefox!

153 Tim 09.26.09 at 11:38 pm

Two extensions I didn’t see anyone else request that I use all the time on Firefox:
1) Zoom buttons on toolbar
2) Active Stop button (stops animated gifs on page)

154 Boris 09.29.09 at 12:05 am

Image Toolbar
This is the only feature I go back to Firefox for https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/243
This should probably be very easy – and will over the course of time save me (and others) MANY HOURS!

155 Rick 10.07.09 at 7:54 pm

166 Mark 12.27.09 at 5:14 pm

The best things would be:

1.DownloadHelper(like in firefox)
2.AdBlock Plus

167 Rik 12.30.09 at 5:52 am

For me, the extensions/plug-ins that are a must are:
1. Logmein
2. Roboform
3. Firebug

168 Hendy 01.03.10 at 8:07 am

definitely: Scrapbooks
I will uninstall firefox right away if there is one for chrome..

169 Rodney 01.07.10 at 10:01 am

Speeddial/Dial Pad, whatever you want to call it.

170 Maurice 01.11.10 at 4:36 pm

- Save Image in folder (soooooo handy, exists in firefox)
- Sync extensions:
I really love the sync bookmarks thing. But it would be even more amazing if I could also sync my extensions. This way you would always have the same stuff on all the computers you use.

171 Zazz 01.18.10 at 11:42 pm

a plugin that allows firefox plugins to run on chrome would be nice, because it would certantly unsurp any power staying power that firefox had on chrome
but hey, since multi platforming isn’t always an option, the one thing keeping me from going chrome 100% is Foxy tunes, or at least a media controller of similar power.

When the sky is the limit, no one should be able to just pick three…

The POP-UP Blocker is currently built in and allowing a window to open removes it from the list and cannot be blocked again. So a newer version of the Blocker would be nice.

The Download Manager is nice, but many others allow for multiple instances or segments downloading of the same file. I was downloading a file in 12 parts last night and it downloaded in a few seconds. This for a Browser that has the ability to have multiple tabs, it just seems to belong here too.

Firefox has Download Helper which allows you to download files that you would have to otherwise track with something like Wireshark to locate the files. So a way to get the paths to files and download them would be nice.

Also being able to select several files to download and tell them to stay in the list and download them all at once later would greatly improve on bandwidth usage.

With this world being so crass a better Parental Control would also be welcome. Not just an ad blocker. Nothing worse than surfing a site and have porn thrown in the face of your boss or you spouse to be.

Music is always a plus. Some browsers allow for an instance of a player like WINAMP or VIDLAN to be selected and run as an integral part of the browser. And being able to select one for music and one for video is also nice.

The initial page that lets me see my last few sites I browsed, add that to my bookmarks and allow for an Icon view of them with an Icon representation of the page when last visited, much like scanning for an album to play by Album Cover view.

This is another place that an ICON Image Pop-Up would be nice. By just moving my mouse pointer over the Hot-Link on the page, an Icon Image will come up in a separate window, representing a miniature view of the page it is linked to. And have settings for me to decide how large or small the Pop-Up should be. So if I don’t like what I see, I won’t go there.

How about network tools? Ping, Trace Route, Whois, Network Map, IP / MAC, DOS, CMD. Nobody else has this level of functionality. You could be the first. Make an IT Rep’s day. Not to mention Linux.

I could do this for hours, but I have to work too.

Now the big one for me is to be able to integrate a Pop-Out Panel on one side of the screen much like the Windows Vista Sidebar which would incorporate my ability to Chat like in Google Talk which lets me Transfer Files, and the main Browser window that lets me have Video Chat. Combine the two. Add the ability to Conference Chat with multiple users. Then mix that with wave in a main browser window, and you have the Elite of Video Conferencing at your finger tips.

I would really like to see a good cookie manager. As of now, your only options are to either allow all cookies, only allow cookies from sites you visit, or block all cookies. I’d like to have a whitelist like on firefox, so I can choose what specific sites I want to accept cookies from. Especially when some sites require cookies to operate correctly.

180 Beth 02.04.10 at 2:54 pm

Meebo plugin that lets you see your updated conversations in the left hand sidebar. (Like the firefox meebo plugin.)
