WebGL Security Boosted In Chrome 13

by arupchou on July 7, 2011

In a bid to make Chrome more secure, Google has announced that cross domain images and videos used as WebGL textures will no Chrome New Logolonger be supported by Chrome 13. It has been found that cross domain textures have allowed attackers to read information from other websites using specialized shaders. It is to be noted that Microsoft had earlier said that WebGL is harmful and Chrome was one of the first browsers along with Firefox to support WebGL. Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 9 is yet to adopt the technology.

Implementation Of W3C CORS

In order to provide greater security against hackers, developers of Chrome 13 have implemented W3C CORS which works with the combination of DOM element and CORS enabled server. It allows application to download images from another server if allowed by the policy of the server.

At present Chrome 13 is available in Google’s beta channel for Chrome browser and that it is supporting Enable-cors.org project which aims to promote CORS- enabling of sites with public content. Mozilla has fixed the issue with release of Firefox 5.0 earlier in June.

There’s a website at: http://madebyevan.com/webgl-water/ with what was described as very cool graphics. But WebGL is required to see it…

You can watch what those people who have a browser that SUPPORTS WEBGL are able to see on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0O_9bp3EKQ

I am using Google Chrome 13.0.782.112 and I installed the Three.js PhotoSynth WebGL Viewer. Still No Workee

Any ideas on making this work would be appreciated!!

Thanks,
Wayne
