5 Lesser Known Extension For Chrome

by Chrome Blog on September 8, 2009

As you guys know there are a lot of extensions being released on our forum by developers who want to showcase their work. Since, Chrome still has ‘limitations’ regarding functionalities one can integrate in an extension for Google Chrome, not a lot of developers are making extensions for it at the moment. So hats off to the developers who are doing it now and updating their extensions with every changes in the extensions system by guys over at Google.

We list most of the extensions released on forum at our blog but ofcourse there are certain ’smaller extensions’, with ‘limited functionality’ and ‘limited use’ which we do not list here. So we are listing some of those extensions here.

Click & Clean

click clean chrome

This is a handy little plugin which allows you to clear your browsing data history with a single click. The extension uses CCleaner to clean your browser history. Clicking on the ClickClean icon will clear your browsing data and also open CCleaner Cleanup Tool to give you more options to deep clean your browser history.

Session Save

session save chrome

This is an extension pretty similar to Session Saver extension released a few weeks back. It saves all the open tabs alongwith date and time as a new folder under ‘Other Bookmarks’. Since your session tabs are stored as bookmarks, you can easily access those sessions from any other computer if you using the Chrome Bookmarks Sync Feature using Google Docs. A very handy extension indeed.

Smooth Scroll

As the name might suggest, this is one of the feel good extensions for chrome. Its main purpose is to make scrolling in Google Chrome a lot smoother. Though i have to admit that i did not quite notice any ‘visible changes’ when i tried this extension, but most of the testers at the forum got this working. There is a new version released for this as well which i have not yet tested. You can download the extension by going to the link below and dont forget to let us know your scrolling experience with it.

Youtube Controller

A nice simple extension which adds a small toolbar of sorts to your chrome toolstrip. It is a very good extension for those people who like to listen to music on youtube. While a video is playing you can Pause/Play the video (music) without needing to switch to that youtube tab. Thus controlling youtube media from any tab you are browsing.

Toolstrip Address Bar

toolstrip address bar

This is a very useful extension if you like to browse in Full Screen Mode. If you notice there is no omnibox or address bar when you enable full screen mode. So in order to go to a new website you need to go back to normal mode and then type the address and enable Full Screen viewing again. This extension will solve those problems by placing an address bar in the toolstrip of your google chrome browser.

I hope you guys liked these extensions. These are not having great functionality, but most of these were sent as extension requests by users. Your comments are welcome.

I like the smooth scrolling one.
It does look smoother, but a little weird at first with two-finger scrolling on my netbook.

Is there an extension that automatically fills out common fields in forms for you? I think they have that for Firefox and I’d love to have that on Chrome too.

You should also checkout the FlashPlus Extension. You can resize, move and maximize Flash – Games, Videos, etc to full browser. A demo on youtube – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CHktLVF0yM

Google Chrome has two serious deficiencies. i) The step size for ZOOM function from the Tools icon (spanner) is too gross. So when it is used the web page spills over the display area very fast – typically within two clicks on the ZOOM menu – or is too small for users with visual defects like me, to comfortably read the page. ii) There seems to be no way to adjust the background and text colors in the web page directly from the Tools icon. The default white background is too irritating to the eyes of persons with visual defects like me. Adjusting the Window color scheme doesn’t help either, as Chrome defaults to its own color scheme always. The only alternative is to reduce the display brightness, in which case the details of images are not seen clearly and hence the same is not a viable option.
Both the above deficiencies are excellently handled in your competitor Mozilla Firefox through the add-on “No-Squint” . Why can’t the great brains working for Google come up with a scheme – either an add-on or a built in feature – to alleviate these deficiencies, without infringing IPRs? Such a step would make persons like me to completely switch over to Chrome, as the lack of the above mentioned features, makes me stick to Firefox, even though the latter is slower and memory goggling.
