Chrome Ad-Blocking Extensions: AdBlock vs Adblock Plus

by Chrome Blog on March 23, 2011

The internet advertising market is growing constantly. However, more and more users decide not to accept flashy banners, layer-ads and tracking from advertising companies that are not only annoying but also often infringe on their privacy. Browser-extensions that remove ads from websites offer a simple solution to these annoyances – but which one is the best ad-blocker available for Google Chrome?

One of the first extensions created for Chrome is “AdBlock”, which was inspired by the Firefox add-on Adblock Plus but despite the similarity in name and its popularity always has been an immature solution compared to the ad-blocker we know from Firefox. But there’s good news.

Now, the creators of the original Adblock Plus have released a version for Chrome as well. This extension is called Chrome Adblock Plus and can be downloaded for free from the Google Chrome extensions page. Finally there is an ad-blocker available for Chrome that blocks all ads without negative side effects like slowing down the browser or stopping some websites from working by blocking too much.

Since the update to version 1.1, Adblock Plus offers many improvements compared to previous versions. The update includes:

  • Ads are blocked from being downloaded and not only hidden afterwards
  • Video ads on Youtube can be disabled
  • A faster algorithm has significantly improved the performance

In conclusion, Adblock Plus (although still in beta) is a very reliable ad-blocker that not only blocks annoying advertisements but, depending on the filter list the user activates, also can stop tracking or remove Facebook like-buttons from the websites. Adblock Plus is 100% free and setup only takes a few seconds.

Great review :/ . Please next time also tell the pros and cons of both adblocker. This is just advertising for ABP

In other words: this is crap

Agreed with ‘Me’

This isn’t a ‘vs’, this is just an ad for Adblock Plus. I use the original Adblock and its great. This article’s title is simply misleading.

Well, I agree with the article. “AdBlock” was ok when there was no alternative. But now I don’t see any reason to stay with it as Asblock Plus is much faster and more reliable. Also, I for one think this intrusive asking for donations by AdBlock is annoying and I rather use an extension that is not that desperate for money.

Me2 is right. The title is misleading.

Also, the developers of Adblock Plus are very stubborn and not very cooperative with users when it comes to fixing software bugs. I reported a defect in the Adblock Plus code and one of the developers was quick to tell me that I was basically lying and didn’t know what I was talking about. Here’s a link to the discussion:

Other people were also reporting these problems caused by Adblock Plus. The developer concluded that if he didn’t see the errors himself, then they don’t exist and nothing can be done about them.

I’ve never used Firefox, so the fact that the developer is creating a Chrome version doesn’t mean much to me. I’m sure he’s a friendly guy, but I wouldn’t recommend Adblock Plus to anybody. There’s a SERIOUS FLAW in the code: it removes YouTube videos from webpages. And apparently the developers refuse to take responsibility for it.

Chris, Adblock Plus works great with Youtube. I must agree with the developers, you obviously don’t know what you are talking about 😉

Seriously, you should read the comments of the developer and then think again:

“Since you apparently didn’t bother to read my comments: this issue *as reported* is fixed. jfletch reported the issue and he also confirmed that things are working now – and that’s pretty much the definition of “fixed”. Now *your* comments are a) off topic and b) not reproducible. Which means that you should: a) create your own issue report (and please not in this project, Adblock Plus forum is the place where issue reports should go into now) and b) answer the questions I asked. Offending me won’t help your cause – I cannot fix an issue that I cannot reproduce. While your comment includes some details they are not enough to pinpoint the problem.”

Know this is an old topic but I came across it and wanted to say to Chris… you’re a fucking douche. I read the thread you posted in, the guy was nice to you (but short, as someone doing free tech support would be) and told you how to go about starting the thread and what information to provide. You just insulted him. I wish they could revoke your ability to download the program and use it, because you don’t deserve it!

The developer concluded that if he didn’t see the errors himself, then they don’t exist and nothing can be done about them.

Well Woot Woot for You!!!! I’m glad someone is taking their Federal adderall with the quickness. Too many times have we gone on without really paying attention to the underlying problem, which in this case seems to be a misunderstanding of ethics regarding the circumventing of the now-useful side affect commonly known as “Corn Pops.”

9 Lazy McNasty 04.06.11 at 3:25 pm

lol. I totally agree BDoubleZz!!!!!

btw….Woot Woot for the CornCop shit!!

I just got both.
I don’t see a problem.

This is a little one sided. I wish there was more of a comparison between the two.

pathetic “review”
