Now Open New Tabs in Background By Dragging/Dropping
I was looking forward to a kind of extension whereby i can open links in the on a page in a new tab in background and without having to right-click and then selecting “Open in New Tab“. Ofcourse, we can always open links in new tab by pressing Ctrl + Left Clicking on the link to open in the background but hey that also requires both your hands right?
Today, most of my problems were solved by the release of a new extension on our forum called “Drag n Go” by no2song. Its a very small handy little plugin but is very useful especially if you like to open a lot of links on a page without getting disturbed by links opening on top of the page you are browsing.
Drag n Go Extension Features:
- Open Links in New Tab by simply dragging that link a very small distance and dropping it.
- Configure the way in which you want the new tab to open.
- B/F (Back/Front) Options : Option to set the new tab to open in background (back) or on the top of the existing tab (front).
- R/RM (Right/RightMost) : Option to set the new tab to open at immediate right of the present tab (right) or at the right of the last tab (rightmost).
Download : Drag 'n Go - For Latest Chrome Developer Build 4.0.202.0+ - V: 1.2.2
Installation & Support :
To install the extension all you need is to be on the latest developer build of Google Chrome, and simply click on the download link above and save the file and the extension would install. Once the extension is installed you will see that it has been placed on the toolstrip and you can configure the options from the toolstrip itself.
Incase there are any troubleshooting queries, feature requests and ideas and for staying up-to-date with the latest versions of this extension please refer to the Drag n Drop Support Thread.

for this, I just middle click the link …
and what if there is no middle click button available? Most of the mouse are now having only 2 butons, and on a lappie its more so difficult..
Nice work though..
you can also drag the link to the tabs bar and it will open.
with so many ways to open links in new tab i find this plugin useless.
if you drag links on the tabs bar there are limitations, first the distace of the drag is bigger and most importantly that would result in the new tab being opened on the frontend.
To be the best thing about this plugin is the fact that it enables you to quickly open a link in a new tab in the background with one single action.. It saves a lot of time when browsing.
Could never get any faster or easier than simply middle clicking the link (@lawson haven’t seen a simple two-buttoned mouse for years to be honest).
Could understand the usage on a laptop, but personally I think “right clicking and choosing new tab” would be easier than holding your left button and using a touch pad to move the link elsewhere…
Sorry for being stupid, but: I have saved dragandgo.crx and it is not opened by nor Google Chrome nor any other application. Moreover, my middle click does not open a new tag
Can anyone help me?
shocked and Milan:
and what if the link is not clickable? just plain text? you can still drag it to the tabs bar, but it will open in foreground, and it could be a long way to go =)
Thank you very much for this plugin.
I have bee using Opera, Maxthon and now Firefox for years and this feature is almost as needful as the mouse itself.
It works like a charm.
I cannot download the crx.
ALL of these following suggestions are built into Google Chrome.
They have been standard in most browsers for a while.
No need for this extension.
……
CTRL+Left Click
……
*sigh*
Also as stated;
Middle Click;
also:
Click scroll wheel;
Again, also:
Right click –> Move mouse 1-5 pixels –> click open in new tab
Thanks!! Have been waiting for this to get to Chrome for a long time!
Makes it really fast to open multiple sites from a search result. Just drag and fling to the right and you open up the links for reading later!
Many people don’t see it how it saves time but try it and you’ll see how fast it is.
I think this is a good idea.
This extensions is only for Dev version, right now Beta version does not support extensions.
I have enabled extensions, I have Dev. But I cannot install this one. There is an error:
Invalid value for permission[0]
Can anybody help? I really would like to use this extension
In addition to the other comments with solutions to this problem…
You can often click both buttons on a laptop touch pad at the same time and it will function as a middle click.
Thank you so much for this plugin. I don’t understand people suggesting that opening context menu and selecting to open link in a new tab, CTRL+click, or even middle click is easier than this!
Why would I want to move my hand to the keyboard, or press middle click which is usually much harder to press on a mouse since it’s a scroll click, when I can just click and do a quick swipe with the mouse? This is in my opinion a fantastic way to surf, along with double clicking the tab to close, and one of the most useful extensions.
So thanks again for sharing it!
Seems useless. Just middle-click or press both mouse buttons at the same time to emulate a middle-click.
Wait, it’s now useless anyway as the functionality is now built-in into Chrome, like it should.
the link doesn’t work ((
Click and drag to a background tab. Is the fastest way to browse for me.
Whats important about this is that is applies to anything selected. So plain text to images. I can read through a page picking off parts of it i like. Then browse the next set of tabs. If you don’t like it don’t add it. 8)
Sadly the link is broken for me as well. 8(
Hi Guys,
For me.. this plugin is heavenly, since I’m always using my Wacom Tablet (which doesn’t have middle mouseclick). Just sad that the link is broken.. i want it !
You don’t need this extension. Chrome works that way by default.
I find this useful because I used a similar one in firefox, it allows for me to have the same functionality of a mouse3 (which I don’t have) and lets me use up less mouse movement space as well.
I know all of the other tricks to open link in new tabs including the center button… nothing is as easy as dragging and dropping. Don’t knock it until you try it.
really?
ring finger on the apple key, thumb clicks the trackpad button. not difficult at all.
even easier on a desktop.
