Reading the title of the post, you might think that this is “yet another google reader extension for chrome”, but in reality it is much more than that. TPReal, one of the newest members at our forum, released the TPGoogleReader Extension earlier today.
Features of TPGoogleReader :
- Shows the no. of unread items, as all of them do.
- It automatically opens all new items in new background tabs, and marks them as read in Google Reader upon checking the checkbox in the toolstrip. You find new things to read appearing, without even clicking anything! Also, at least for me, reading items in their full version by navigating to the item’s link is much more enjoyable than reading the abbreviated, style-less version directly in Google Reader.
- When working in the normal mode where new items do not get opened automatically, clicking on the items counter opens the first unread item and marks it as read.
- When a website has a feed, an icon appears on the right of the omnibox (page action). Clicking on it opens the feed in Google Reader. Thus without subscribing you can view it in GR.
- When you navigate directly to an RSS or Atom page (like this one: http://www.ruby-lang.org/en/feeds/news.rss) normally Chrome displays a mess. With TPGoogleReader you will get the page displayed in a monospace font with preserved formatting. Refer to the screenshot, clicking on the icon will open the feed in GR.
Using TP’s Google Reader Extension:
Each Chrome window has a toolbar (see the screenshot) with GR icon (click to open GR), a checkbox (when checked, all new item will open automatically in this window) and possibly number of unread items (not visible if checkbox is checked). If there are more windows, only one of them can have the checkbox checked, checking it on one of them will uncheck it in all other. So you can have two windows – one where you have the tabs that you normally use, and second with the checkbox checked. And if you have a free moment, you can switch to the second one to see if something new arrived.
The extension does not need your Google credentials, it just works using your current cookies so you simply need to be logged into GR for this to work. This works just like most of the other GR extensions.
Installation & Support:
Again, this extension is only for the Dev Build of Google Chrome, since extensions are not available for Stable and Beta Channel users it wont work on those builds. In order to get on to the dev channel please refer here. Once you are on the developers build just click on the extension download below it would automatically ask you for confirmation to install.

nice idea
Looks like a cool extension! I’m gonna try it
Those of you who now me on this forum, know I’m not easily impressed
However, as someone who didn’t use readers of any kind, I was prompted to check them out because of the number of posts pertaining to extensions showing the feed count in Google Reader …
Of all the extensions available I chose TPGoogleReader as it seemed to have more functionality than anything else …
I have to say I wasn’t disappointed …
From the dynamic count (which seemed to update even faster than the one on the open page) to the opening of feeds automatically in separate tabs, I was impressed.
Just a suggestion, you might want to think seriously about the opening automatically option, it comes as a bit of a shock the first time a load of pages suddenly start opening on their own !! – lmao
Enjoy the experience ;-D
Pretty nice post. I just came across your site and wanted to say
that I’ve really liked browsing your posts. Any way
I’ll be subscribing to your blog and I hope you write again soon!
