Google Releases Chrome 16 Beta; Allows Multiple Account Syncing

by arupchou on November 5, 2011

Google has come up with the latest beta version of its Chrome web browser (16). It has also updated Google Chrome Dev to version Chrome 16 Beta17. The most important feature of Chrome Beta 16 is its support for multiple sign-ins. What this essentially means is that several users can have their own applications, bookmarks and settings in the browser. This is a great feature for those who do not want to create several OS profiles. It is also idle for those who want separate account for business as well as personal use.

According to a blog post on the official Chrome Blog, Miranda Callahan, a Chrome software engineer writes that signing into Chrome will result in sync and bring Chrome bookmarks and other personal settings to all the computers. She further writes that any update one device automatically gets updated everywhere else.

Using The Feature

Once users install Chrome beta, they can set up multiple profiles in the options menu, found beneath Personal Stuff by clicking on “Add New User”. A nickname is automatically generated. Users can also sing-in the Google accounts through the options menu to bring Chrome settings from the cloud. Earlier, Chrome users had different profiles by logging into the OS as different users. The new Chrome beta permits users to switch profiles quickly in the browser. If the user is using someone’s else’s computer then they can create a sign in and sync all their bookmarks and settings.

However, uses must be careful that the feature does not provide security from other users of the machine. It is better to have separate user accounts built in the OS for this. But still this is a welcome feature for Chrome’s web apps and customizable home screen. While we feel that the feature is great, we would like to get your opinions on this new feature of Chrome.
