Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator (MAME), the popular arcade emulator has been ported to Google Chrome browser via Native Client
(NaCl). The emulator was earlier available through Apple’s App Store and allows users to play various classic arcade games which have been ported by loading a ROM file. However, many of the ROMs you need to play games are copyrighted. But there are many free games which can be played without copyright violation.
Robert Muth Carrying Out Project
The project for porting MAME has been carried out by Google’s Robert Muth, who has posted a detailed case study about the challenges he faced in the four-day project. Google’s NaCl is essentially a software sandbox to run native codes inside the browser. With debut of NaCl, it becomes easy and safe to run intricate applications within Google Chrome. It also means that you can play games in Chrome browser without actually installing them.
So with MAME ported to Google Chrome, you might feel the urge to play few games. You can go to Chrome Web Store and download Robby Roto and play it for free in your browser. Robby Roto is one of the copyright free games and was released by Midway in 1981. It is legal to download it and play. The Chrome edition of MAME also permits you to upload and play your own ROM iles and so if you have physical copies of other arcade games you can download them legally from a site hosting ROM. One can also visit the official site of MAME where you can download several arcade games for free.
