Kaspersky Labs Researcher Warns About Risks In Google's Chrome OS

Roel Schouwenberg, a security researcher at Kaspersky Lab warned security professionals about risks in Google's Chrome operating Chrome OSsystem which might make it unsuitable of business purpose. Though Schouwenberg admired Google about developing a platform from a security point of view, but he also warned about users vulnerable to attacks from applications running within the browser.

Presence Of Malware In Chrome Marketplace

Addressing a gathering of security professionals attending RSA 2012, Mr Schouwenberg said that everybody knows about increase in Android malware found in Android Marketplace and the same do exist in Chrome marketplace. He further said though harmful Chrome applications are less prevalent than mobile applications; it is difficult to find malware on Chromebooks which run on Chrome OS and browser since they are not protected by anti-malware software. He gave an example of a Chrome app which tried to steal a user's Facebook data.

Meanwhile, following Schouwenberg's claims, Google issued a statement which said that the company is thankful to Mr Schouwenberg for recognizing the robust security design built in Chrome and Chrome OS. The statement however added that Mr Schouwenberg missed on certain important points. It said that Google's Chrome extension system has been designed keeping security in mind and that it is not accurate to say that one cannot run malware protection on Chrome.

The statement further added that Chrome has inbuilt malware protection through safe browsing service and in case of developers it is believed that their extension API does provide the essential tools required for anti-virus vendors like Kaspersky in order to come up with an extension based on solution for their specification. Schouwenberg also talked about several dangers regarding Apple's iOS and iCloud online storage.
