Default ChromePlugins.org -> Details on our Extensions Repository

    Hi guys,

sorry for the delay in keeing you guys updated with our extensions repository. I was not feeling well in the last week or because of some climate changes and cough and cold but its ok now..

I am providing the link to the design demo of the repository please see here :

    http://cssjockey.net/projects/chrome/

Note: This is just the design and the a validiated html version.

Some details i would like to give :

We wont be "integrating" this system on our site chromeplugins.org but it would be on another domain which belong to us "chromeextensions.org".
And a link to this extension repository would be added to our blog and forum here.

The repository would be based on a highly customised platform of wordpress. Wordpress is a blogging platform as you guys know(chromeplugins.org blog), but on our repository we would make it look and work like a repository and not a blog.

    The idea is,

Users register of the site "chromeextensions.org"
The Register/Login links which you see above would change to My Account/Developer
Under My Account we add links to the Dashboard, Profile, etc and under Developer we can add a link to add a new extension.
Clicking on Add a new extension would take the user to "create a new post"
Once the user is there on create a new post screen, he can upload the new extension file, supply with all the details as are required in fields which would be predefined, etc. Almost all the things you see here : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/201

With uploading of the screenshots etc, the best thing is the user wont be needed to work on the look of the post, it would all be predefined. So the user just needs to upload file, give the required info upload the screenshots, select the liscense and thats it.

For updating or adding a new version of the extension, we can put the link "Edit the post" (update extension data) which would be shown only to the post author if he has submitted an extension.

Perhaps this might sound a bit confusing right now to you guys who are specially not aware of wordpress.. but in 2-3 days i would put up a working demo of the system.

    Any comments/suggestions are welcome.

    Thanks..

What I think about the idea?

Well, what I wrote to you here on 06-15-2009 says it all:

The idea of sub forums is great and will indeed be necessary in the future as things evolve.

What would be really cool, but I don't know if at all possible is kind of a "repository" for extensions (.crx files) where programmers can upload, explain and version track their work.

I am not suggesting a simple section as we have now but something more in the like of what Mozilla has done with https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/

I have the feeling that the first site/forum/web place that comes up with a decent and tailored build place for these extensions will be a long term winner...

I had the problem a while ago when I wondered if I used the latest versions of all the nice extensions I use and had to spend a certain time to check them all in separate places...

A simple forum section will not survive the quantity of extensions available in the near future, we need a "special repository" asap.

I am not a programmer, nor can I help build (add on worldpress classic forum) but that is just what I think is really needed.

I am sure Google will come up with something soon, but it would be nice to beat them to it... no?

    Thanks,

    Luc VN

PS: the same goes for user scripts !
I just have to thank you for implementing it

Very bright also to have a completely different site for this,
all the other "Chrome Sites" will have no problems in pointing to it.

    Out of curiosity.
I don't see any different sections for the different types of add-ons (Extensions, User Scripts, Bookmarklets, etc.). Are you planning on having different sections for each? Or at least tagging them as such giving the user the option of searching by those?
I think if you're pooling them together into the same search results, it should definitely have something apparent on the summary what type of add-on it is.
And Themes should definitely be searched differently than code based extensions.
