Suggestions Needed About Sub-Forums (IMPORTANT MUST SEE)

Hi guys,

First of all let me congratulate all the members of our forum to helping and coming together to make "The No.1 Resource and Dsicussion Forum For Google Chrome on Internet", a special thanks to our moderators Stamga and devilslackey and to our senior members StevePaul, Kyrax, sulasno, Luc Vc, and every other member who is active here. Great Job Done Indeed!!

The reason why i have started this thread is to implement some major changes on our forum in order to get more visitors and members signing up on our forum and making it a more crowded place. I was looking at the forum a couple of days ago not an a member/administrator but as a visitor's point of view and even though our forum has a lot of resources its not organised properly.

For example, our Chrome Plugins section has been crowded with "not so user friendly posts and threads".. I want to sub-divide that Chrome Plugins forum into 2-3 more sections and sub-forums.

I propose, we create a Chrome Plugins Development sub-forum under http://www.chromeplugins.org/google/chrome-plugins/, where members can discuss about what plugins they want to create, or have an idea to create that plugin, need help from other members to compile the plugin, etc..

One of the recent threads i saw http://www.chromeplugins.org/google/...okie-7758.html, such threads would be more suitable in the Chrome Plugins Development sub-forum, what say?

Similarly, we can create sub-forums for other Forum sections such as Chrome Themes as well. So that as a visitor or as a non-techie, non-developer, and only as a basic chrome user, it would become easier to navigate through.

I would like to know what changes, removal, additions you guys would like to see on our Google Chrome Forum. I would implement those changes as soon as i can.

Release and Development sub forums for Plugins, Tools, and Themes would all be pretty useful in my opinion.

First of all let me thank you for this nice place where we can all spend some time in discussing Chrome and related stuff.
The idea of sub forums is great and will indeed be necessary in the future as things evolve.

What would be really cool, but I don't know if at all possible is kind of a "repository" for extensions (.crx files) where programmers can upload, explain and version track their work.

I am not suggesting a simple section as we have now but something more in the like of what Mozilla has done with https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/

I have the feeling that the first site/forum/web place that comes up with a decent and tailored build place for these extensions will be a long term winner...

I had the problem a while ago when I wondered if I used the latest versions of all the nice extensions I use and had to spend a certain time to check them all in separate places...

A simple forum section will not survive the quantity of extensions available in the near future, we need a "special repository" asap.

I am not a programmer, nor can I help build (add on worldpress classic forum) but that is just what I think is really needed.

I am sure Google will come up with something soon, but it would be nice to beat them to it... no?

I like forums where there are few sections but where they are all useful.
Right now, I think the "Tips and Tricks" section is misused. People are posting bookmarklets and the like in this section.

Also, the Chrome Tech section should go away if you plan on creating a tech sub forum for tools / plugins ..

Another small suggestion : You might want to rename the "Chrome central" section to something that indicates clearly that this is a section meant to discuss the web site, not the browser. Maybe change the name to "Website discussion" or "chromeplugins.org discussion".

Overall, this sounds like a good idea. Good job !

BINGO!! This is exactly what i had in mind, i am in search of a programmar for this. I had a chat about such an interface with Kyrax about a week ago.. This is something which we really need..

I want to call on programmars and designers on our forums together for this. I would be putting up a job-opening for this on our forum to see if we can find some of "our own" members who can do it.

I've got a simple upload script I made for a friend's site to manage music uploads.
It's a simple multi-directory listing with password protected uploading.
I can slap some class tags on it and post it for someone more artsy to style.
Sound good?

Also @Kyrax, you're right about the Chrome Central thing, but I think instead of renaming it (or maybe do that too) it should at least be moved out of the Google Chrome section, considering it's not really about Google Chrome. That'd probably help a lot.

@Kyrax & Waha: I agree with the Chrome Central name. I think it should be changed to 'Site Discussions or 'Site Announcements' or 'CP Central' or 'CP Discussions' or CP 'Announcements' or something like that... and changed section too.

I adjusted the script but a lot of it is old code and not very standards looking so yeah, don't laugh. It works.
There's some settings at the top of the php file you can adjust to your wants, just don't forget to create the uploads directory you set and set its permissions accordingly.
You are free to delete the link from my post after downloading in fear of other chrome development websites stealing it and implementing it before you. :P

I have changed the "Chrome Central" forum from Google Chrome Section to "Chrome Forum News" section at the bottom of the forum homepage.

This is now i think very clear.

Any other suggestions? Specially for Chrome Plugins forum?
