    Just caught up with the other posts. NOFILTER is the thing eh? Thanks for that PAEz.

    Regarding Adsweep as an extension, as it stands, wouldn't that mean no filters could easily be added or removed from it? I cut it right down to next to nothing so I could easily add my own, and didn't want it redoing what BFilter was blocking. I use a shortcut in my Windows Start menu to it for quick filter changes.

    This thread started out on Adblock+ and BFilter, but is winding its happy way somewhat off topic(ish). Maybe one of the admins would like to rename the thread, and start another pinned one on ad blocking vs. element hiding, have a poll, etc., as Sulasno suggested..?

    @Michael

    Hope you enjoyed your walk this afternoon ;-)

    As I use ChromePlus as my primary browser and keep Chrome for checking updates I've got BF set at the system level so it's not an issue when linking from an Email ..

    You mentioned BF docs, I couldn't find anything, have you got a link ?

    I'll give the 'Allow' a whirl and see what happens ...

    As a matter of interest what does your AS 'cut down' block, just need to see if it's working in CP properly (messing with how CP handles User Scripts)

    Hi StevePaul, great walk, and clotted cream scones after as my friend had been to Devon recently. Heaven!

    BFilter seems to be on a couple of places at SourceForge, but there are some docs on this page.

    My cut down Adsweep basically has most of the original filtering content removed, along with some code that Chrome doesn't need. I left at least one filter in each section, and just added my own for a few sites near the top. I'm not completely sure what all of it does (nor BFilter for that matter), but enough to do the job I want.

    When I stripped it I checked it worked on Adsweep.org, ie., it flashed the red message saying it was active, then added my few filters. If you open it up you'll see the sections where you can add/modify stuff. The main advantage is that your filter settings are safely in the file (my settings disappeared in Adblock+), but of course it looses out in interface functionality if that's your cup of tea. I prefer less in the interface, myself, and editing a script is quick and easy.

    I'm fairly sure BFilter's content modification section could be used to do the same job, but I'm not sure quite how. I had a go, but the regex stuff wrecked my head! Perhaps one of the intrepid coders might have a go sometime and pass on their secrets...

    @Michael

    Clotted cream scones !!! (heaven)

    Btw .. Thanks for the info ...

    The reason I was asking about your 'cut down' was to make sure it was working as a User Script (haven't used them for an absolute age) ...

    In ChromePlus you have a start up option where you can identify the User Script folder and I wasn't sure whether it needed the --enable command line to enable User Scripts (turns out it doesn't - always something new with CP) ...

    The 'Allow' function doesn't work, will have a play tomorrow to see if I can get it to work ...

    @PAEz (and Michael)

    The NOFILTER works fine ...

    The first time I tried it, I copied it exactly as you had posted it (not blaming you - honest !!) and it didn't work ...

    Redid it with www at the front and it works fine ...

    All in All, a good days work (and I got to learn something new about ChromePlus)...

    Thanks Guys ;-)

    My brain's gone - time for bed. Thanks for the update, and happy ad-free surfing!

    Edit (next day): Regarding my cut-down version of Adsweep; it also removes a lot of stuff which had caveats, ie., may or may not make your web pages look ok. This response on the Google Chrome Help site just reminded me of it:

    "If you are using Adsweep try disabling or uninstalling it, Adsweep blocks portions of pages or even whole pages incorrectly in some cases, and there is no way to override it."

    The cut-down one gives you a clean base from which to start and add only the element hiding that you want.

    Hi Twins.Seven. I'm not sure if you mean in BFilter or Adsweep..?

    BFilter's urls.local is for site blocking, so stops ads being loaded from any listed sites (as well as the default filters in the urls tab), and also blocks connections to counter and stat sites, so when the browser gets the page it doesn't even know they were there. As an example of that;

    AD *thisis.co.uk*

    will block any connections to;

    http://ads.thisis.co.uk
    http://newads.thisis.co.uk
    http://adserver.thisis.co.uk
    http://www.thisis.co.uk

    etc.

    To block all domains the ad site uses, I'd change it to;

    *thisis.*

    which would stop;

    thisis.com
    thisis.net
    thisis.us

    etc.

    In BFilter's Filter section (tray icon > Configuration > Filters) you can add simple expressions which replace anything you like in the HTML page before the browser sees it, but I must admit that after a few tries I can't get it to work for me. (Has anyone had a go at this successfully..?)

    If you meant Adsweep, which I use for cleaning up page elements (as dvCr and Adblock+ also do), then getting rid of a DIV block which contains something you don't want to see can be done with;

    sites['example.com']='[class="block-this-class"]';

    Here's an example of the filters I use on the Daily Mail newspaper site;

    sites['dailymail.co.uk']='[class="page-header bdrgr2"],[class="news"],[class="home item"],[class="travel item"],[class="tvshowbiz item"],[class="articleAds"],[class="health item"],[class="googleAds"],[id="r3c2p1"],[class="footer"],[class="page-footer"],[class="and-footer"]';

    I can't help with IFrames, as I've never blocked one. Perhaps a look through the original Adsweep code (or the new version by another author) will help. All I do with my cut-down version is inspect an element I don't want to see, then add it as described above. I got confused by Adsweep, so after using BFilter to stop the connections I chopped Adsweep down so it's easy for me to hide things.

    Me neither. I tried writing a find/replace filter in BFilter to remove some site junk, but it didn't work. The regex help page I found messed with my head, so I'm no wiser on that score!

    Maybe some of the coders in the forums will spot this and offer some help..? I'd like to ditch my cut-down Adsweep and just add new rules to BFilter to block elements rather than hide them after they've already loaded.
