    Ah, well there's good news and there's bad news (sort of). The bad news is that it's done my head in too! I got one example working perfectly and thought I'd got the hang of it, then it failed on every subsequent attempt. Much reading of posts and testing later, and still getting nowhere.

    The good news is that I've got all of my YouTube clean-ups working fine with very simple rules, and am almost ready to post a merge file for them here. I'm not sure why people in the Proxomitron forums are having such problems with simple matching, because it's working for me.

    I think I'd rather have more spare time than be clever at the complicated stuff, so am following the simple path. More later.

    Well this line works for me...
    <div[^>]++id=$AV(watch-promoted-videos-container)$INEST(<div,</div)</div >
    ...on every thing Ive tested it against (with mods for each test offcourse.)

    But I really want to know why this doesnt....
    $NEST(<div[^>]++id="watch-promoted-videos-container",</div >)
    ...when I read it and read the manual it seems that it should work, but doesnt?

    OhWell the fist one works fine and should be able to use it for the block list I wanted its just going to look a lot uglier than it should ....who cares as long as it actually works

    And yeah, their nuts on that forum.....but very smart nuts
    Their config files do WAY more than I want them to.

    I think most users will find Sidki's filter set to work well for their needs. It's not perfect and it needs to be updated more often (a lot more often) but seems to block about 90% of the bad stuff.

    @jkroeder; That, for me is part of the issue - downloaded lists "need updating" all the time. In other words, those who download them and expect them to keep working are reliant upon the author(s) to maintain them. I advocate a far easier way of doing it; add only the blocks you need.

    Sidki's filter set is huge (300kb zipped for the list I found), not very readable (in fact, quite a mess to many), and requires all kinds of instructions to help people understand it. On the other hand, I cleared out at least half of Proxomitron's header and web page rules as they're not needed by Chrome, and have added only 43 lines to my URL Kill File to date. I see no adverts on sites I visit. Also, Proxomitron causes no lag whatsoever, whereas I read posts on other forums about its lists needing pruning and speed tweaking to stop the lags they cause.

    If you want simple, easy to understand, tidy to read and update, and seriously fast, use only your own short list. When you see an ad or a stat/counter loading and lagging, kill it. Simple, effective, anyone can do it, and you're not dependant upon someone else to maintain your files.

    For anyone currently trying this avenue, I've attached a couple of files with simple element blocking rules for Chrome Plugins and YouTube. You can add them by editing your Proxomitron config (.cfg) file and pasting the rule blocks into the [Patterns] section. (You can also merge files using Proxomitron's 'File > Merge Config Filters' menu). See Post #88 below for extra info.

    I think it's also worth mentioning that these are not element hiding rules in the sense of hiding things after they're loaded. The items are blocked before the browser gets the HTML page. It makes everything a little faster, and nothing appears and then disappears - it just isn't there any more.

    Sidki's filter set is to aggresive and to complicated, caused me alot of headaches.
    Awesome set tho for the paranoid... and for picking through
    I rather hide things as I find them, not have anything that MiGhT be dangerous blocked and then have to figure what to unblock once I figure out that it was the filters that is making my site not work.

    @Michael

    Couple of things ...

    When I unzipped and copied the files (Promoxitron folder) mentioned in your post I got a couple of files where there were duplicates, is this right and which ones should I keep ...

    In your post above, does the ChromePlugins file contain the blocking for the 'Top Tip' issue

    Yes, there are duplicates. Unzip the contents of the other zips into the same folder, overwriting the previous files. Sorry that wasn't clearer.

    The Chrome Plugins filters block the huge banner (takes up a silly amount of screen space, to me) along with the upper and lower Top Tips links. The Google ads, etc., are already removed by the URL Kill File.

    The YouTube ones allow removal of advert panels and various sections, some of which are left behind after the URLs are killed. These can be toggled on/off in Proxomitron's Web Page section. Two of them remove the Google Chrome advert panels, but you'll only see these if you've used Proxomitron's Header section to identify your browser as IE. YouTube only bugs people to get Chrome if they're not using it.

    One of the neat things in Proxomitron is that your content blocking filters have names you set yourself. If you use a content hider extension, you can edit the filters you've added to a page, but you just see a whole lot of DIVs and TABLEs and whatever. With this you name your filter and put it where you like in your list, and each has a checkbox so you can toggle them on/off to see the effect they have, etc. Setting them up takes a little more thought at first, but once done you can see exactly which filter is which, and rename them if you like. Makes for much more sensible rule handling later on.

    (I've alter the above posts to be more clear). Have fun!

    @Michael

    Thanks for this, unfortunately for some reason I can't get back to the original posts at the moment ...

    Anyway, as far as the duplicates go ...

    Is the best way to open and copy the contents of the files the sequence you have in your post (#68) with your 'list' file last, then just overwrite as the duplicate message comes up ...

    I noticed that one (could have been two) of the older files were actually larger ...

    Really glad your 'ChromePlugins' file contains the filters for the Top and Bottom Tips (one less job for me to do -haha) ...

    The next task after this is to install Promo in Ubuntu ...

    I do so love a challenge ;-)

    Yep, just overwrite them in that order. My files are smaller as I've removed stuff which isn't needed (though as I said in the post, it's all in the Proxomitron ZIP file if you want it).
