I'm very surprised there aren't more requests for this!!! This is the #1 thing keeping me from using chrome exclusively. This post was from JULY...so I guess not many people are developing these extensions?

If the whole chrome experience is based around tabbed browsing, you would think SOME sort of tab appearance/behavior modification would have been default from the start in 1.0! How the hell do you develop a browser without thinking of that?

The #2 request for a plugin would be the "Find as you Type" feature (which is, of course, default in Firefox.)

I'm seriously just dumbfounded and expect a lot more from a multi-billion $$ monster like Google. It's not like Chrome was just released, and it's in beta or something. So many more options should have been added into chrome...

Just from a programming perspective, does anyone know if it would be very difficult to make a tab modification extension? I'm willing to make it myself, I just need the tools to do so...

I think that even whilst we're on Dev, and think of it as pretty stable, the development team perhaps don't yet. They're working on so many issues that it's mind boggling - you only have to trawl through the dev system pages to see that. My impression is that even those who contribute what time they can are working their a**es off.

Yes to that, and it'll come once things are much more stable.

I don't think Chrome is the multi-billion $$ monster we might think it is. If Google set aside a whopping chunk of budget and set up their own in-house team to create Chrome then it'd be a different story, but it seems only part that way to me, and part 'farmed out'.

Probably not too difficult per se, but the problem is that the API isn't fully defined and working yet. Functions are still being added, and existing functions changed. That's making it a bit of a nightmare for extension developers, as they no sooner create something cool than a new Chrome update kills off their hard work. Bummer!

I agree with your points, and kind of wish that Google had got it all together and then released it. But perhaps they needed and/or wanted the input and constant swearing from others to refine it through the fire of early user input. Usually the kids aren't allowed to play with the toys before Xmas day, so perhaps we should be thankful..?

    Thumbs up

Michael, thank you for answering my post so thoroughly. I thought maybe I'd get flamed for my impatience, but you were very polite and I appreciate that.

I agree with everything you said - I suppose I should be more patient since chrome is, after all, free.

It's just a shame that Firefox is such a resource hog - if not for that, we wouldn't be having this convo because I would have absolutely no desire to use another browser! Not only that, now that I've moved over to Win 7, FF seems to freeze completely every now and then. I'm still trying to figure out if it's one or more of my extensions.

Despite all that, FF is still hands down, no contest, the best browser out there...

Hehe. Me... patient? I guess you caught me on a quiet afternoon. I get really arsey about things (as you perhaps felt you had) and one guy recently said something like, "Jeez, you'd think I just shot your dog or something!" I know from my own medical history (not an excuse) that it's often a question of blood sugar. Low blood sugar usually leads to instant anger, hence diabetics are often arsey sods. Good rule (kinda vampish): only post when well fed. Or drunk/stoned - makes for fun.

Well, the other thing is DO be arsey about Chrome issues, but on the Chrome/Chromium development forums as well as/rather than here. The dev team lurk around forums like these to see how things are being received by the more touchy players, and they do seem to respond to our feedback. They're smart folks, and they like to see how the whiny bitches hit on their new baby. When the whining from us goes quiet I guess they know that ordinary folks will be happy as pigs in chocolate.

Something of a downer. I've been re-playing with Firefox and Opera lately. So many cool things, so many "can't live without" extensions, and here I am still enslaved to Chrome. (You bitch, stop whipping me like that!) Actually, it's tickling, not whipping. That's how they get you, little by little...

Despite all that, FF is still hands down, no contest, the best browser out there...
Well, I know what you mean, but you know you don't mean it, right? Firefox is the king of plugins, and has stuff coming out of its ears. But sadly (and we all go this way in the end) the stuff is thick and grey. I hate to say such things, being a bit of an old bloke myself, but technology moves on so fast these days.

Firefox was once what Chrome is now; the best, the fastest, the coolest looking - the wasp's nipples. One day in the not too distant future, Chrome will slow, then stagger, and finally succumb to another young pretender. But not just now.

You know what's really scary/interesting..? We all go the same way. You might like to think about that one...

@ericrex; That should be quite easy actually (apart from the annotation perhaps), as there's a Chrome API function which grabs the page as a jpeg image. I might have a go at that sometime soon.

You could prolly do the annotation if you used the canvas object, but its all a bit beyond me.

Hmm... Remind me about this one over the next week or so, as I think it's a good idea for a simple extension. I haven't looked into it yet, but using the 'grab page into jpeg' method and stuffing it into a new tab should be fairly easy, and the image could then be saved with right-click > Save Image As...

Oh, and for those insane enough to want it, I've just found Borland Delphi 7 Personal online, and have a registration key for it. (Borland gave it away free on magazine CD's for a while, but it disappeared from the web some time ago).

PAEz, you mentioned writing a theme editor in Delphi. If you haven't delved into that yet I'd be happy to assist if you like. I don't bother with themes myself, but it sounds like a neat little project. I wrote something called Papel a few years ago, which many writers lament the 'loss' of (in terms of updates. I'm going to recreate that and make it even better - have to, as I lost the source code CD when I moved house).
