About 3 days ago I thought "wouldn't it be cool to make an extension for Google Chrome?"
I'd never made an extension for anything before, had essentially zero knowledge of javascript and even less in regards to HTML5, but I was adament to make my idea a reality: an extension that removes all the clutter from Gmail, just like the Minimalist Gmail plugin for Firefox, developed by Matt Constantine.
Within the first day I'd launched version 0.1 which hid just a few elements and offered no customisation. It barely did anything but I was excited to make progress. The day after that version 0.2 went up, hiding considerably more of the clutter, but still offering no ability to change what you wanted to hide.
And now, today, version 0.3 launches (with the help of Waha amongst others) and includes:
- The hiding of all the cluttered elements
- Fully functional toggle system
- A spiffy-looking options page
From a developers standpoint this is probably an incredibly basic extension, but it feels great to go from nothing to something in a few days and have a working version of my vision running in my browser.
Get Minimalist Gmail.
There's plenty of work to do like cleaning up the code, fixing bugs, and perhaps adding additional toggles, but I think it's really coming together. :-)
