Default making gmail default for mailto in IE or any other application

I have been searching for a way to make Gmail the default mailto:
We just switched to Gmail and we only use Chrome for that. Our company's default web browser is IE 7. Is there a way to make Gmail the default for all in Windows XP? I found this thread but it didn't work the way I expected. I need Gmail to work as the mailto from any MS Office app also.

    Any suggestions?

    Debra

Set the mailto for the OS, it was mentioned at the bottom of the comments on the page you listed (KOTIX).
    Easier way :

    run, regedit :

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\mailto\shell\open\command\

    edit (default) to :

    “C:\Users\*username*\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe” https://mail.google.com/mail?extsrc=mailto&url=%1

Wow that was way easier Have fun !
....theres a good article/post somewhere on it I just cant find it at the mo, but you know what to look for now.

PAEz, I tried your crx and it didn't work. I put the reg hack in that you directed me to. When I go into IE and right click let's say on a picture and select email picture it brings up the default IE internet connection wizard. My supervisor has even tried it on his VM XP and still nothing. Our workstations aren't that complicated. Windows XP SP3, Office 2007, IE 7 and some other applications that are not related to Google in any way. Now that we left Groupwise behind and migrated to Gmail last week, all mailto functionality has been lost in every application. And this function is used quiet heavily in my agency. Any suggestions of what I could be doing wrong?

    Thanks,
    Debra

There some better notes on the reg thing here....

...makes it so gmail can be a default email app....but it isnt going to solve your problems.
mailto links and sending an image are different things. The send thing will be a hassle and I dont know of a simple solution. Its the attachments that make it a hassle I think. You could either use some app to help....

....havent tried either of them and Id imagine their not what youd want.
Or the other thing you could do is use an email client and use the IMAP or POP settings of gmail.
