I've had my pagerank display do this for a month or something, since they released the API pretty much. Just haven't released it because the Alexa is too long to fit and I couldn't be arsed to do anything about it. Couldn't be bothered to release one without the other. :P

I hate to pee on the bonfire, but all this page rank stuff is pretty much a waste of time these days. Companies are producing SEO tools and selling the idea that it'll make a huge difference to web developers, but usually it doesn't. The Alexa rankings and others are basically a con.

My advice is forget about it, let the major search engines like Google pick up on your site (assuming it's decently created), and otherwise get on with other things and be happy.

PageRank is very important if you want to sell ads. Selling ads on a PR1 site is almost impossible. Selling ads on a PR3+ site means at least 50% more money than on a PR2. So it is very important (not just for ads..., also for getting higher ranked in search engine results).

Ah nandayo, you are obviously a spammy advertiser. I thought so. Well, you waste your life trying to make money by pissing off others. There's a much better way, should you choose to seek it.

No, it's not that at all mate. And apologies if that post sounds like hate mail - it's not people I dislike, but adverts. Not even adverts per se; I expect advertising in certain places, like shops, etc., but it's when ads come to us without being asked for that I just want to stop it, and stop it dead.

For example, junk mail through my letter box. Having worked for the UK Post Office once I know that they sell a service whereby they'll delivery spammy crap to every house for a fee. You pay them X hundred pounds and give them boxes of leaflets, and they tell their postal workers to put them through letter boxes. They don't have a choice about it, because they're told it's part of their job. so a) bullshit - it isn't part of their job. It was called the Royal Mail because originally mail was delivered under the orders and protection of monarchy (and interfering with mail is still an offence punishable in law). Over the past couple of years I've had junk pushed through my letter box by a postman, and it's gone straight into my recycle bin. A complete waste of his time and the idiot company's money.

The Internet is even worse, and I am sick of people saying things like, "Yes, but the site has to be paid for somehow". Sure it does, but it's really, really cheap to host a site these days. As I've said elsewhere, I host a couple of charity sites and pay for it myself because it costs so little. 15 a year for 20GB bandwidth per month, on very fast servers, with truly excellent customer service and technical support. 50GB bandwidth costs just a little more. If I was trying to make a profit via those sites, the cost of hosting them would be negligible. So the old, "This is costing me money" whine just doesn't cut it, ok?

The definition of Internet 'spam' normally means unsolicited email advertising, but now also encompasses unsolicited in-your-face advertising. If you place a site online and entice people to visit it, usually with the promise of free stuff, and then throw advertising in their faces, you're a spammer. You've enticed people to the site in the hope that they'll click an advert an make you a tiny amount of money, and you hope lots of people will do it, thus making you increasing amounts of money. But here's the main point; you're being intrusive, and depending upon your point of view, partially dishonest.

If you met someone socially, found them to be a nice enough person, and agreed to meet again some time, you wouldn't expect anything intrusive from that person. In fact you would tolerate it. So what if you then found that they not only posted crap through your letter box every day, but greeted you every time you left your house and place of work, and stuffed advertising leaflets into your hands? What if, in fact, that person had been introduced to you as a local vicar, or a health worker, but you then found them to be a spamming advertiser? I posted elsewhere here about people misusing .org and .org.uk domains, as they're meant to be for charities, not for profit organisations,, and so on. Maybe Mr. Chrome admin will boot me off and ban me for that, but it's not an attack on the person. I just think people should a) not misuse such domains like that, and b) be straight-up and honest about advertising and making money. We all have to make a living somehow, but trying to do so by basically forcing advertising onto people just because they visited your site, which you enticed them to with the promise of something free, just sucks.

Apologies if this seems like a long rant. I'm not in a bad mood, but I do type very quickly, so a page or two is as easy as a couple of paragraphs for most people. Anyway, as to never having read anything about page ranks, you're making an assumption there. For all you know I may have spent many hours reading about it. The importance of page ranking is obvious, but much of it is over-hyped and believed by people who think making money from advertising is cool and will bring them lots of income if they just work smart at it. There are idiots posting videos on YouTube which entice people to watch them under some pretence or other, only to turn out to be, "How to get rich from Internet advertising". "I made $2,000 last month from Google ads, and you can too!" Sure buddy, more like you made $20 last year from Google ads, but Google and others have you so wound up about making money that you'll piss off millions of people by becoming another pushy idiot and posting crap all over the web. Page ranking is only important if you've got that greedy little money gleam in your eyes. Those without the greedy outlook don't care what page ranking they have, because the users of their services will find the site via other means, eg., local information. No spamming needed.

I can't convince anyone not to advertise and spam people nandayo, but I can stop the ads annoying me, and I can show others how to block the crap they don't want in their faces. I'll leave it to you to discover in the long run if the promises of lots of money from intrusive and often dubious practices actually works. Personally, I doubt very much that you'll be driving around in a Ferrari any time soon.
