    Default Toolbar bottom line?

    I love chrome. But I love the toolbar more. From what I can see this will never be available in Chrome, so I need to continue to us IE. I am not alone.

    Does the irony of this escape the Chrome development team?

    No, I don't want a bunch of plugins to accomplish the same thing. I just want to install Google Toolbar for Chrome.

    Curious why so many people rage over there not being a google toolbar in Chrome, I decided to look up the features and see what they're actually missing. From here
    1. Custom buttons with gadget support
    2. New Tab Page
    3. Quick Search Box (IE only)
    4. Synchronized Toolbar settings
    5. Improved AutoFill
    6. Suggestions for navigation errors
    7. AutoLink
    8. Web History
    9. Bookmarks
    10. Send To
    11. Translate
    12. SpellCheck
    13. PageRank Display
    14. Highlight Search Terms
    15. Pop-up Blocker (IE only)
    16. Word find (IE only)
    17. Browse by name (IE only)
    18. Google settings notification (IE only)
    19. Open with Google Docs (Firefox only)
    20. Send with Gmail (Firefox only)
    21. Custom Layouts (Firefox only)

    Chrome's comparative features:
    1. Browser and page actions. Difference being that you can't use existing "gadgets" at the moment.
    2. New tab page.
    3. Omnibar includes search functionality. Difference being that there is no button to switch the site you are searching. You either have to type the URL and press tab, or change the default in Options->Basics->Default Search
    4. Unimplemented. There are no settings synchronization and there probably won't be. If this is important to you, I suggest using Portable Chrome.
    5. Autofill. Located under Options->Personal stuff->Form Autofill
    6. The default site not found pages. This can be turned off under Options->Under the Hood->Privacy->Show suggestions for navigation errors
    7. Unimplemented. However an extension can easily do this. For instance, Cleeki.
    8. chrome://history/ or Wrench->History
    9. Wrench->Synchronize My Bookmarks or Options->Personal Stuff->Synchronize My Bookmarks...
    10. Unimplemented. Can also easily be done with an extension, though I don't know of any.
    11. I use a bookmarklet for this:
      Code:
      javascript:(function(){location.href="http://translate.google.com/translate?u="+escape(location.href)+"&tl=en&hl=en&ie=UTF-8";})()
    12. Has spellcheck for textareas and text inputs.
    13. In my opinion, pagerank would be a nice thing to go into Page Info in the righ-click menu, but this feature is unimplemented. I also use a bookmarklet for this (not that I actually use it):
      Code:
      javascript:void((function(){var%20a=location.href;window.open("http://google.com/search?client=navclient-auto&ch=6-1484155081&features=Rank&q=info:"+escape(a));})())
    14. Ctrl+F search function highlights all matching words. Now if only it had RegEx support that'd make me a happy camper. (Google toolbar does not have RegEx support either.)
    15. Pop-up blocker. I forget how to disable it, I think there's a command line flag for it.
    16. Ctrl+F again.
    17. Omnibar basically does this, just doesn't automatically use "I'm Feeling Lucky", so only difference being having to do one extra step.
    18. As far as I know, this is unimplemented, but I don't think external programs can easily change your search settings..
    19. I think I saw an extension that does this for PDFs once. But it's unimplemented as far as being standard functionality.
    20. Unimplemented, though there was an extension for it.
    21. Unimplemented..

    So really what is it you feel you're missing?
    Gadgets, Synchronized Toolbar settings, AutoLink, Send To, Translate, Page Rank, Send with Gmail, Custom Layouts?
    None that haven't been replaced by users seem that important to me but maybe they are to you. But really, I think the only complaint people REALLY have about not having a toolbar in Chrome is that it's not in the familiar layout, it's all over the browser.

    Yeah. I dunno, I kinda decided to drop my old extensions so they'd stop stressing me that they're not working. And the other day I wanted a way to keep track of my Carapass auctions and figured I'd learn the new stuff Chrome extensions had to offer.
    Kinda sad the toolstrip is gone but I was happy to find out the browser actions are full HTML at least.
    Anyway, just working on new stuff instead will probably keep me here moreso. Though I would like to fix my video grabber. Maybe make it a page action instead of injecting buttons though.

    Id love you to fix your video grabber, never really got the chance to play with it before they removed unsafe document (or whateva it was called).

    Yeah the toString is a great idea, never thought of it either. Talking back isn't too much of an issue since I can use messaging.
    Thanks for the links too! Hopefully that will help some people who like Chrome but can't live without those functions stay on Chrome. :]
    Man regex searching.. :3~ Sucks it doesn't save your last search in the bar though.

    Just change its popup.html to this.....
    Code:
    <html>
    	<head>
    	<script language="javascript" src="jquery-1.3.2.js"></script>
    	<script>
    		$(document).ready(function() {
    			$("#s").click(function(){ search(document.getElementById("q")); });
    		   var lastSearch = localStorage["lastSearch"] ? localStorage["lastSearch"] : "";
             if (lastSearch!='') document.getElementById("q").value=lastSearch;
    		});

    		function search(inputObj) {
    			if (inputObj.value.length>0) {
    			localStorage["lastSearch"]=inputObj.value;
    				chrome.tabs.getSelected(null, function(tab) {
    					chrome.tabs.sendRequest(tab.id, {exp: inputObj.value}, function(response) {
    						var l=""+response.count;
    						var w=50+l.length*10;
    						$("#count").css("width",w+"px").html("matched "+response.count);
    					});
    				});
    			}
    		}
    	</script>
    	<style>
    		body, input, table, td { font-family: arial; font-size: 12px; }
    		#count { display: block; }
    	</style>
    	</head>
    	<body>
    		<table>
    			<tr>
    				<td><input type="text" id="q"></td>
    				<td><span id="count"></span></td>
    				<td><input type="submit" value="search" id="s"></td>
    			</tr>
    		</table>
    	</body>
    </html>
    Now I just need the enter key to work and Ill be happy

    Thanks.
    In return, put this below the $("#s").click(...); line for your enter key:
    Code:
    $("#q").bind("keyup",function(e){ if(e.keyCode == 13){ search(document.getElementById("q")); }});

    Improved AutoFill This is probably one of the big ones. I like to click on the toolbar button and fill in my information whenever I order something, no matter what the site. What you pointed out doesn't do that, does it? Won't that just fill in the form on a particular web site if I have been there before?

    Bookmarks: I find these unduly complicated. On the toolbar I just click my Google bookmarks and select from the drop down. All I have in Chrome is Other Bookmarks. Have I set something up wrong?

    Send To: True there is a script to accomplish this, but it doesn't do what the "share button" does, that is a very nice feature on the toolbar.

    But nonetheless, your reply was very well put.

    -Jim
