Aha indeed that kept coming to mind as I read the articles.

Great find though and I'm interested to see how that will end up.

That will take some time, let us sit back and enjoy... or participate and fight...

I like to see those new ideas, but I don't have much faith on that.

    IMO, that's too much rush.

It's great to think that a top hardware is becoming obsolete in terms of such services, but let's imagine a netbook dependant mainly on a connection to internet. If it drops, what happens next? What If someone is calling you and right in that time the internet is down, and you needed to be fast?

Maybe for countries with a very stable broadband this is okey, but that's not the reality for the whole world.

Also, everything that is connected is in much more risk than what is not. The more online and connected we be, the more dangerous things get, and as we all are humans, I doubt there will be ever a 100% safe online based system.

I'm completly against leaving important things (including docs) online.

Firehalk, i agree with you, although there is no 100% safe offline and online system, and never will be. the possibility of loosing the internet connection is higher than, say, hard drive fail, but it is just one of the problems that users are dealing with.
following your logic, it is much more safe to use paper documents, since they are not likely to be lost by power failures (which happen a lot, at least where i live =)

Well, when I said about offline, I didn't mean the OS itself, but a CD or a DVD for example.

I've heard stories of people that always use Gmail just through webmail, and someday they did get in there and... boom... all messages were gone.

Since I heard that story, I never more had the habit on thrusting any online solution. I always download all to my computer and backup it.

Problem is that the more you let online, the less you will care for downloading and backing up. It's like we start thrusting so much those online services, that sometimes we don't even loose time with such backups (I used to see Gmail as that, really solid and would never think such things happen there).

Google is the company I most thrust in terms of such things, but that opened my eyes to all of those online wonders.

You don't have to back things up, when they're on a cloud, they're already backed up by multiple computers.

I really doubt those Gmail horror stories are true. Google is most likely backing up their data on a regular basis.
Also, since it's all distributed computing, if one computer crashes, you won't lose the whole service.

Finally, as for having the internet everywhere, this will be true in the years to come.

The story about Gmail is true. I unfortunately was 1 of 3 people that I personally know to get owned by Gmail. Hence why I use Outlook for everything now
