    Default Search from omnibox

I never heard of omnibox until I began to delve into why Chrome 6, which I unknowingly updated to. Can anyone tell me if Google is going to re-enable the search from address bar later. This was the best feature for me in Chrome now it is gone.

Can anyone tell me if there is a search block plugin for chrome so I can at least make a google search from the header, rather than have to go to the website Google.com to make a search?

I'm on the 6.x beta rather than the 7.x dev, but I think I'm understanding you correctly. I don't see why the heck this would have changed in the dev version, since it's a very easy thing to assign and use, but if this is a "no duh" response, sorry about that, just figured I'd help if I can.

Right-click the omnibar and choose "edit search engines". Most search engines here use a search keyword, followed by your query. For example I have wikipedia in my list with keyword "wiki", meaning I type something like "wiki trombone" from the omnibar and it will do a wikipedia-specific search. The default search engine doesn't even require the keyword, though. It sounds like your default somehow got removed or changed. Just select Google from the list and click the "set default" button, and typing your query into the omnibar will automatically search Google.

trclocke I did what you said, rt. clk on address bar a list came down, but didn't even contain google as a search engine. What I was able to do in chrome 5 was just type what i wanted to search for and it would switch to google search page with a list of what I had typed into the search page. Chrome 6 won't do that, what ever I type in it either just sits there or it will try to quess what site I wanted to go to and go to one of them, I don't want a site I want to search for a word. Now I have to go to google search page to look up that word. They could at least put a google search tool at the top so I can at least search from the rather than have to switch to http://google.com.

    Go to Edit Search Engines
Click Add and use these values...
    Code:
    Name: Google
    Keyword: ggl
    URL: {google:baseURL}search?{google:RLZ}{google:acceptedSuggestion}{google:originalQueryForSuggestion}sourceid=chrome&ie={inputEncoding}&q=%s
You can use any keyword you like.
Now find that engine you just added, click it so its selected and click on Make Default
You should now have google as your default search and not have to use a keyword for it...dont know why its not working for you? but hopefully this will sort it for you

Or alternately use the awesome Search Center......

I suggest you uninstall Chrome completely, including your profile.

Then clean your PC with something like CCleaner.

Then reinstall and please watch the screen carefully. At one point you will be asked to choose a default search engine. Choose Google if that's what you like. Yahoo! and Bing are the other choices at this stage.

Ok that makes sense. It sounds like you were messing around in your search engine list and accidentally deleted google at some point, which removed your default search too. Follow PAEz's instructions above to re-add the google search engine and make it your default again. That'll solve your problem.
