I think so.
If nothing else it's probably necessary for the "Restore to default theme" command.

But interestingly enough I have always used Stamga's themes but before the 'Restore to default theme' was made available I always used to rename the original theme rather than overwrite it (I still do) ...

I tried out the 'Restore' just to see what happened and it worked OK without the Original being available ...
