Is there any way to use a "modified URL" to open an application from my hard drive or perhaps a flash drive. Basically I visualize such a thing as working as a desktop short cut but actually in the Chrome URL bar.

I think if you type the path to files, they'll open. Some in their regular manner, others in Chrome. e.g. a txt file will be displayed in chrome.

I'll play about and see what can be done

EDIT: It'll actually "download" unsupported files (pretty quickly ), so not quite what you want. I have another idea though, which I shall try now...

EDIT: My idea didn't work quite as well as I hoped, but not too far off. Install the extension "IE Tab" and add "file:///*" to the "Auto-URL" list in its options. Then type e.g. "file:///c:/" in the Chrome location bar and the C:/ drive will be opened in a Windows explorer tab WITHIN Chrome. Double-clicking files here will open them as normal. Not perfect, but better than nothing I guess. Typing the full path of files still causes them to download, and if you type the full path in the IE Tab address bar, it'll also prompt for download (although you can just select "Open" or "Run" and not save the file again, which is slightly better).

Thanks for the quick help, initially the "to files" pretty well solved my problem, however your second suggestion looks like a whole new world for me! I frequently like to check other file documents when I'm on Chrome, but maybe opening applications could be a bigger help! I need to decide if minimize Chrome, open the other applications, etc etc is best! Again, thanks!
