Default Tips from the main site

I've put up a few tips on the main site, so i though i would make a list of them here so they can be found a bit easier.

    Custom Search Engines in Chrome

This will enable you to configure custom search engines for almost any site with a search feature. This will enable you to type shortcuts in the Omnibar for example wiki browsers and you will be instantly taken to Wiki's search results for the term you searched.

    Create Profiles in Chrome

This one will enable you to effectively run 2 or more Chrome personalized instances of Chrome, one for you and one for another family member so whatever you do stays in "your" browser.

    Bookmark about: pages

To save typing about commands such as about:memory, you can make a bookmark of them all to access them with a click.

    Google Chrome Shortcuts

A ton of keyboard shortcuts to make navigating and accessing features easier.

    Default Preferences

Does anyone have a more or less detailed description of the Google Chrome's Preferences file? In particular, I would like to know if there's a possibility to fine-tune the new tab page, for instance, to increase the number of most used search engines from 3 as it is now to at least 5, since I use more than 3 frequently

Great browser, though, I started using it for Google Reader and other Google services.

The "Create Custom Search Engines" trick should do what you want, you could set one up for Ask.com then conduct searches on Ask directly from the Omnibar. There's no limit on how many you can create.

Well, I know I could create any custom search engines, configure them via Settings and search thru the omnibox by typing a sort of "images[TAB]large hadron collider".

The question was about the "empty" page you get when opening a NEW TAB. There on the upper right is the SEARCH area with 4 search boxes. The upper one is for searching thru your history, the next 3 are the most used search engineS (in my case, these are Google, Wikipedia Quick Search and Yandex). I would like to EXTEND the list of search engines represented in the Search area of the NEW TAB page.

Ok i understand now, my new tabs are set to open Google's homepage so i don't even see that page. Also i have a stack of search engines setup and just access them using Omnibar which is really no different to what you want to do except the search is typed at the top of the screen instead of the side.

It's late here now, but tomorrow i will see if it can be hacked to allow more. Doing it this way though without the addon API would mean the .dll will get overwritten with every Chrome update.

Another solution, create a search engine and bookmark mashup on iGoogle and set your new tabs to open that page. There's already Gadets to do these things so it's easy to configure your page. If you have web hosting, you could also make a private page with search boxes for all the services you want and most visited sites as well.

But yes, i'm surprised Google didn't allow more customization with the Chrome start page. As soon as we can start writing plugins things will be much different.
