Prior to yesterday, Chrome had worked swimmingly.

I had uninstalled and re-installed Chrome because of a problem with To-Doist (web based task manager). After reinstalling, Windows Aero would be disabled and Windows basic with 8 bit etc would activate. I could reset to Aero/32 bit, but any screen refresh on Chrome (new tab, window etc) would again disable Aero.

I've tried running the Windows Fix-It diagnostic on Aero (no problems found), resetting Chrome to it's default settings and uinstalling and reinstalling to no avail. I even tried installing the newest Beta, which didn't work either.

Hmmm sure you havn't set some compatibility settings... ? Otherwise I would try doing so, and then remove them again.. rightclick where you start chrome, and choose the fan "compatibility" .. Then I would check that nothing is checked and remove if something is set...
Otherwise if nothing has been set, try set and remove.. if that doesn't work, perhaps set to "vista" without service packs.. or just try some different setttings and see if they help.
