Default Chrome downloading strange files instead of displaying web pages...

    Hi.

As of a few days ago, for no apparent reason, some very strange things have started happening to Chrome.

When I visit (ahem) Yahoo! Answers, no page is displayed, instead, Chrome downloads small files called "index" or "download" (with no file extension). Certain other websites (IMDB for example) just display gibberish text, or again download small files.

I've tried uninstalling, removing all folders, settings and reinstalling.
(It should go without saying that I've also searched Google).

I was a long term Firefox user, but have recently started using Chrome more than Firefox, so this is really annoying.

I'm using XP SP3 and Chrome v6.0.437.3 Beta (<- although I was using the stable version before uninstalling)

Really? Can you get browser-specific viruses? IE8/Firefox/Opera all function as normal.

Scans with Nod32/SuperAntiSpyware/MBAM all come out clean.

Can you reproduce the problem on another PC? It may give an indication whether the problem is specific to yours. Another pointer maybe if no other credible reports of the same problem surface.

Do you have Internet Download Manager (IDM) installed?

YES! I turned on Chrome IDM integration exactly two days ago. Well, I've just turned it off/rebooted and the problem has gone. Shame I can't use IDM with Chrome, but I'll live.

    Thanks so much!

Is this a well known issue?

Well, as far as I know, there is no such thing as "Chrome IDM integration". Is there a reference that IDM works with Chrome?

According to IDM's browser support page, Chrome is not listed.

    Here:

Note: the message above doesn't appear when you tick the IE/Firefox/Opera boxes.

Tried to post a screenshot, but apparently it has to "await moderator approval"

    Try this:

Then I suggest reporting this problem to IDM.

Firstly, their integration box from your screenshot lists Chrome and Safari, but these browsers are not listed on their own browser support page.

Secondly, there are lots of problem reports when using IDM with Chrome:
