I was always wondering why Chrome was getting so slow after installing an extension. I just checked using my task manager that Chromium seems to run/load chrome.exe for every extension that I have running. So with two extensions (Gmail checker and clock) it’s 50 MB more RAM.

Reminds me of Firefox and that’s what originally made me switch. Is that a bug? Or (as Mozilla calls it) a feature?

Yes, Chromium has a multi-process architecture and so it creates a new process for every page/plugin/extension loaded. It is also true that this behavior consumes much ram ( not necessarily CPU ) that a single process one, but it doesn't make chrome slower.

You can in the taskbar within Chrome (rightclick title and choose tasklist / joblist) check what an extension consume.. If you think it's to much you can either 'complain' to the author of the extension or if you know how, debug it yourself and figure out where the bug is

yes, it show task manager. but no detail for extension consume memory?

PS: I see you use Windows 7... so maybe that’s why it’s not there? Dunno.. I’m using VISTA

After looking at the Chrome task manager you will probably see extensions that you really don't need to use at that moment.

I rely on multiple extensions in Chrome for productivity but do not need them active all of the time. So to keep Chrome's speed healthy I right click each extension in the extension bar and disable the one's I don't need running all of the time.

When I do need a particular extension I go into the customize and control for Chrome and select "extensions". I can enable the extension I need at that time. This works great for extensions like Translate, Docs PDF, etc..
