Chrome always seems to run one more instance than tabs/windows for me, ie., if I have 3 tabs, I get 4 Chromes in the task list. I read somewhere that it makes sense, as there's always a first instance running, then one for each tab. I've never seen one running at 60+KB though.

You can, if you feel this is a problem, just run it in 1 process.. there's a flag, cant remember it but can be googled its like "--nomulti"
That said, you should have several chrome tasks. That is one of the big and major changes in Chrome vs the browsers that where before... Multiple tasks allowes you to take advantage of more cores, it provides better security and by closing on tab(process) you actually removes this and free up memory unlike Firefox that just keep growing and eat your resources (that said next version of FF will be made like this and copy multiple process design from Chrome).
If you open the taskbar inside Chrome (rightclick on title) you get a taskbare where you can control it more accurate.
It is what should prevent 1 tab from crashing the rest (and whole browser).

Of cause it can go up there, if you got heavy flash or shockwave on a page it will quickly raise.. Or if you got extensions that renders with rss files for instance..
