Hi,

I was trying to download a large 7.2GB file using chrome and in the middle the download stopped around at 4GB.

now I have tried clearing all data and info from chrome but I am still unable to recover 4GB space in downloaded data. I tried deleting Chrome cache and USER DATA files from Local Setting Google Chrome folder.

where is this file downloaded and how I can I recover this ghost drive space?

Try to turn on "View Hidden Files and Folders", then go to your Downloads folder (Normally it's in Documents\Downloads) to see if your file is there.

If it isn't, you can try to go to your Temp files, though I don't know if Chrome's temp files are there.. To do that you have to browse to C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Temp if your using Vista or to C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Local Settings\Temp.

I tried your suggestions, as I mentioned the file was cancelled so very unlikely to find it in the Downloads folder. I still checked and its not there.

I also followed your second suggestion but the Temp folder is cleaned out by me a few minutes before, the folder path is C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Temp
(your path is different and it was already clean)

again there was no change in the available disk space, so I searched whole computer for all visible/hidden files anything larger than 1Gb and I came across PR37.TMP which seemed just about the size I was looking for. possibly a malware file but if Chrome downloads large files in small chunks then I have no clue, maybe the occupied space is still there.

btw, I have updated Kapersky 2010 and PC Tools Spyware Doctor and Latest Windows Defender updates.

Where was the file located? Did you delete it?

err.. yes I have deleted the file it was located in c:\>windows\Temp folder.

reason I deleted because less likely any software is using a possible image of this size. The temp file I found was sized 3.8GB, my apologies if I neglected this piece of information in my previous post.

So, it seems like that was the part of the file that was missing..

And while your in C:\windows\Temp folder, you can clean it all up. It should give you even more disk space

I am still not sure if this file is related with my cancelled download, can anyone confirm if Chrome uses windows>temp folder for downloads "in process" before moving completed file to the Downloads folder.

is the download still visible ?

In my experience Chrome doesn't use a temporary file for your downloads ...

It downloads directly to the file you have as your default ...

Tools > Under the Hood > Downloads ...

i see well in that case Chrome is still occupying quite a few GBs in drive space in cancelled downloads of these large files.

@sulasno It was visible as a cancelled download but I got rid of all download history. Download folder settings are all on default.
