hate hate hate IE but i currently need it to view and fill out an application however if i start IE8 and enter a search, click a favorites link, or enter a url, chrome hijacks and displays the page...fine with me but the page i need will only display on IE6 and above . is this a bug or setting ? would rather not have to stop using chrome as my default browser .

holy crap i'm totally confused after going through that thread twice . i have to download and install software to get IE to run separately on XP ? i'm not looking to just switch browsers if i come across an IE only page while using chrome but being able to run IE on it's own, will become needed as this is what the company i'll work for uses for work at home employees .
shortened: i don't need an IE tab, i just need to be able to use internet explorer .

I can run IE and Chrome separately although Chrome is the default browser
That sounds rather odd.. must be some bug in Windows.. (vista?), I can't amaging you can blame the browser for this behavour.. But I would set IE as default browser and see if that does not help... perhaps restart after..
OS = XP
have chrome set for default, guess it can't hurt to set IE and restart .
edit: reinstalled IE8, no problems with browsing with IE now .
