I am running XP Pro SP3 and Chrome 3.0.195.27 (I see an update is available now). My Adobe Reader is 9.2.0 (no updates available).

Sometime in the past, my ability to click on a link that would open a .PDF file stopped working with Chrome and it used to work just fine.

The links to PDFs work okay in IE and Firefox. If I click one in Chrome, I see (usually too late) the end of the URL ends in .pdf and know I am now stuck/hung and have to kill Chrome and open Firefox or something to see the PDF file. Sometimes just the one Chrome tab will hang, sometimes I have to exit Chrome completely and start over.

I can open PDF files from my HDD and other browsers with no problem. Chrome fails every time.

I am not sure when this happened and I think I got some Adobe updates a couple weeks ago, but since it didn't bother me anyplace else, I figured I was good to go.

Dunno if it is a plugin or addon in Chrome or how to check/delete/reinstall just the piece that opens PDFs, etc.

Now I am tired of this problem and would like to fix it without losing any of my Chrome bookmarks, etc. (I have been Chroming for a while now!).

I have not tried uninstalling/reinstalling Chrome yet, but if I do I would like to keep at least my my bookmarks and some cookies if possible...

It's working here, but I'm using foxit and not adobes... What did you install first, I would not be surprised if Adobe has to be installed as the last part...

I open that link and it show error message that the pdf file is broken. I'm using adobe. but, other pdf file display well in my chrome

I uninstalled my Adobe reader 9.2.0, rebooted, the install folder was gone, reinstalled Adobe Reader 9.2.0 - Chrome still hangs on PDFs. Firefox works fine still.

Uninstalled Adobe Shockwave Player 11.5 (thinking it was the last Adobe thing I got), reboot, still no go with Chrome. Firefox is fine.

So I thought I would go to the PDF link, let it hang, and resize the window like the article said but before I did that I launched Adobe 9.2.0 to see what this Display PDF in Browser thing was about. I discovered mine was checked so I was ready to uncheck it.

I just left Adobe reader running sitting on the Preference page - ready to uncheck the box, launched Chrome, went to my PDF link which 30 seconds ago did not work (wanting to try the resize thing first) and viola she opens fine.

The only thing that was different is that this time Adobe was also open (behind Chrome now). I didn't change anything in Adobe reader - it was just launched and running so I could see the Preferences.

I closed Adobe, Chrome, rebooted, it still works just fine. Put my Shockwave Player back and it still works.

The problem with reading PDF files can be cured by adding a new folder (named Plugins) in the Chrome application folder (this case Chrome 4 ). In the Plugins folder place the Adobe PDF plugin for FireFox (nppdf32.ddl).

This plugin can be found in "Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat(version number)\Acrobat\Browser". Then go to "C:\Documents and Settings\(username)\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\(Version Number)" Paste the plugin in the new plugins folder.

Quit Chrome. Restart and it should now read pdf files.

Not my solution, read it somewhere, don't remember where off hand, but it works for me. Used the same solution for Chrome 3, works there also.

It opens faster and isn't as resource hungry (ie Bloated !!)
