Every once and a while Chrome downloads and processes safe browsing data (checked with processmon), and devours 100% of my CPU. I know it's not my AV or some thing in Windows interfering since it does this in the Linux version (on Ubuntu) too. The problem goes away if I turn off the browsing protection, but I like that extra check on my own precautions.

I get the feeling it's because I'm on a fossil of a laptop (Inspiron B120). Is there any way to throttle it? Maybe tell it "No, you can only have 10% of my CPU. Behave or you don't get any supper."

I searched the forums (and Google) and couldn't find anything. Also read through the troubleshooting FAQ.

I'm on XP SP3.
