Default HDMI Monitor; Cable or Adaptor?

I am looking at getting an ASUS VW246H Black 24" LCD Monitor and I am interested to know whether my HIS Hightech H487QT1GP Radeon HD 4870 can support the HDMI that the monitor offers.

On the 4870's spec page, it notes that HDMI is possible with an adapter, but HDMI adapters seem to be just as expensive as the monitor. I also noticed that there are cables that can connect a male HDMI device to a male DVI device (for much cheaper).

My question is, can I use the monitor's HDMI function with the aforementioned cable, or must I get the expensive adapter (or is HDMI even worth it)? If the cable can't work, I can stick with DVI on that monitor.

Why would you want HDMI on your computer ?
Do you plan on plugging some kind of Blu-Ray player to your monitor ?

Also, why would you want a video card with an HDMI output ?
As far as i know, DVI is more than enough for a monitor.

The only use for and HDMI output would be to plug a TV instead of a monitor.

I might be wrong, but if don't think you will ever use a BLU-RAY player with your monitor and if you don't think you will be using a HDTV instead of a monitor.. you should stick to DVI.
