Default Introduce myself - New to this board

    Hello All,

My name is Mark and I live in South Houston, Texas. South Houston is a small city that is sandwiched between Houston and Pasadena. I was born in Houston, but moved to Northport on Long Island, New York in 1975 when I was in the 3rd grade. I served in the USAF, then returned to Houston in 1990 because I could not afford to live in New York. My mother, step-father, brothers and a sister live in New York and I still visit Northport on a regular basis.

I am married and have son, Michael, who is 16 and a daughter, Brooke, who is 14 going on 25. I work as an Operations Supervisor in one of the larger oil refineries located along the Houston Ship Channel. I have worked in Operations and Maintenance for about 17 years, but have been an Operations Supervisor for the last 9 years. Long story short, I consider myself to be more of an Operations person for those who talk the lingo. My specialty is Delayed Coking units and many consider me to be a Subject Matter Expert.

In 2006 I accepted a position as the Operations Reliability Supervisor for the entire refinery. Basically I was tasked with converting the paper run sheets that our Process Operators use to record their shiftly readings into an electronic, paperless format. I worked with one of our computer engineers to configure and build a database utilizing Wonderware's IMC software. The Process Operators now utilize Symbol (aka Motorola) MC9090-S mobile computers to download, complete and upload their readings into the database. I am the site admin for the hardware and software, but do not maintain the server side of things.

I am also the site administrator for our electronic data management system, which is used to create shift notes, view sample and process information, and to ensure that tasks required by various regulatory agencies are completed on schedule. I also helped to build and configure this application, which took many months and hundreds of hours to complete. Long story short, I have used computers since the early days of DOS (TRS80 and Commodore 64). I used to build my own computers, but these days it is cheaper to buy a new OEM computer, reformat the hard drive and perform a clean install of the O/S.

I have been using the RTM (final) build of Windows 7 Professional as my primary O/S since early August (obtained legally from MSDN). It's a great O/S and I will be happy to answer any questions concerning Windows 7.

Anyway, that's probably more than most of you care to know about me. As a former Firefox user, I would like to thank Google for creating a great browser that is clean, intuitive and fast. My advice would be to avoid loading down Chrome with bells and whistles, which I feel is causing Firefox to become a bloated resource hog.

    Peace,
    Mark

If it makes anyone feel better, everything that I have learned is because I broke something or screwed something up and had to "unfix" it. My wife frowns when I touch the computer because she fears that I will end up having to reformat and reinstall everything. As for my job, I do well because I am OCD (Something my boss calls attention to detail) and endless strings of 10-12 hour days. Basically I have no life....LOL.
