Why cant we delete our own threads?
This is a discussion on Thread Delete? within the General Chat section, part of the Chrome Forum News category: Why cant we delete our own threads?...
Why cant we delete our own threads?
no permissions I suppose
nevertheless, in a forum, members shouldn't be allowed to delete any threads including their own
contact any moderator and request for assistance
in alot of forums you can, its all part of that free speech thingy XD, allowing them to edit, but not delete, kinda defeats the purpose, as someone could just rename the thread, and its contents, so its simply wasting space...
if those forums allow members to delete their own threads, I suppose they would also allow the members to close and move them too; and I suppose that there is no need for moderators too
I doubt anyone would want to respond to threads that can be deleted by the original poster; it defeats the purpose of a forum;
can you imagine a thread running into hundreds of responses and get deleted ?
Free speech doesn't mean that you can say what you like;
Free speech is still govern by a set of rules
(Thread moved; off topic in Chrome Plugins)
In another forum I visit, the thread poster, has the permission to edit the title, and delete the thread. And I think this forum should also have the same thing. Yeah controlling other people's thread, and moving your own thread, is too much. But deleting the thread, and renaming the title is perfectly fine.
Just because a person can remove their thread, doesnt mean they will.. Infact most of the time, they either A) abandon it, B) update with their results C) continue to check back, because they havnt found what there lookin forMe: who here likes dogs![edited to remove the preceding]==> who here likes dead babies
You: I love em.
Someone else: Omg there sooo cute
This quote is an example, please dont take it offensive >.<
The only people to delete their treads, are the people that actually care about what they are posting, and the forum they are posting on (if you dont care, you just abandon...)
moving threads is a little different.. and should only be for mods (if a user wants to move their thread, they delete, and re-make the thread in the other section), as otherwise they could get the responders in trouble...
do you see how allowing users to remove their own threads reduces spam? and clutter, while lightening the load for mods...
frankly I have not seen a forum where members are allowed to delete their threads;
please provide some sites
as for mods removing spams by the same poster; it's a breeze;
shouldn't take more than 5 clicks
I take it that you understand that once a thread is deleted, all the posts are included with the deletion
I would rather have a thread closed than deleted ...
The reason I'm against deleting threads is that sometimes a thread will contain some information (not always about the original theme of the thread) that can prove to be of value for something else ...
As an example, Michael3185 did a lot of work on AdBlocking and the use of Proxoxmitron ...
Unfortunately he decided that he no longer wanted to be a part of the forum and decided to leave ...
Imagine if (for some reason) he had a bit of a grudge against one (or more) of the members of the forum and had the ability to delete his thread ...
We would have lost one of the most informative posts (imho) on this forum ...
To close a thread would need some kind of criteria ...
At the request of the owner (but only if the number of posts is below a certain threshold) or by an arbitrary decision based on the last time something was actually posted to the thread ...
Personally, having contributed to quite a few threads on this forum I would be more than a little annoyed to find that the author (for what ever reason) had decided to delete it ...
Last, but not least, you need to ask yourself why (and in what circumstances) you would create a new thread and then want to delete it ...
In reality it can only be a lack of interest (perceived ?) in the thread, either no posts or very few ...
What we do know is that not many people come back to say 'Thank You' or sign up to be members so we will never really know whether a thread is of use or not ...
I take the approach on creating a new thread that it is of interest to me and hopefully it will prove to be of interest to one other person, and, if not it will at least prompt the individual to do a little bit of research ...
But that's me, ever the optimist ;-)
if you need an example of a thread that needs deleted, this might be one? XD
ofc aslong as users cant delete their own thread this thread serves a purpose...
although a second thread of the same thing may need deleted!
If you want websites with this functionality, i know that
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Chrome allows users to remove their threads
Its not to much about purposeful spam, but rather accidental spam, by users who are contributing.
I originally created this thread to check out how many options polls were allowed to have, and if there were any special features for them. (before i realized threads couldn't be deleted, and the only way to get to the poll part is to post)
@Bloody
I'm a TC at the Google Chrome help forum and was a 'victim' of someone deleting their thread, I wasn't very impressed !!
If nothing more, the originator should at least have the common courtesy to ask fellow contributors their opinion with a reason for wanting to delete the thread ...
I believe that once a thread has a post against it (other than the originator) it is in the 'public domain' and effectively the originator now 'shares' ownership of the thread with their fellow contributors ...
