This is a question we get rather often of the forum and that i see every now and then on different boards.

I really don't get why someone would want to do that.
The main reason is usually to block certain websites from children.

However, all they have to do is install another browser. Heck they could simply disable the addon and that would allow them to browse whatever they feel like.

My point is : Blocking websites on the application layer (Browser) is not a solution to whatever problem you are trying to solve.

What you need is either a physical firewall (configure your router to block certain IP).
    Or get a proxy.

    Tell me what you think.

If you REALLY WANT to block websites through an extension despite everything i just said, you can do it through a content script that redirects the user whenever you connect to a certain webpage.

    Question

i am using websiteblock which works for IE ONLY and in FF i m using an addon but now google chrome!!!

i wanted a simple one solution(software) for any browser. someone told me about HOSTS but i don't know how that works.

im using DSL with w/wireless modem, what i wanted to do was that for certain websites addresses typed instead of opening those sites another blocking page appears.

any good idea will be highly appreciated.

    Wow, how extremely short-sighted...

There are lots of good reasons to block at the application level.

One, can be used for blocking ad/tracker sites.
When developing I may want sites handled differently in different browsers depending on what I'm working on...

My comment was mostly oriented toward stopping certain users from seeing certain sites.

Aamir mentionned blocksite (firefox add-on) which does exactly that.

I realize that blocking ads via software is a viable solution.

Perhaps if you let us know what use a plugin like this serves for you someone, can help. I can recommend plenty of solutions that might help you (and will even be more configurable) depending on what your exact needs are.

    OpenDNS comes to mind...

Wow, what an incredibly unhelpful answer. There are lots of reasons to block sites. If there weren't, extensions like BlockSite wouldn't exist. There's the Adblock extension, but it seems to only work on images, not on everything from a domain.

    This kind of works https://chrome.google.com/extensions...bfjcpiianmeoed

I think it's quite okay to want to know what a user's purpose really is.

I use Privoxy quite successfully to block several sites across browsers. There are opinions that Privoxy slows things down but I'm not able to gauge that.

The Hostsfile would also work across browsers but it can't be fined tuned with regex.

Re. AdBlock Plus with Firefox, if you use a custom expression, you can block a site.

Why do people continue to comment on 'threads' where the last post is over 12 months old ?

This particular 'thread' (and it wasn't particularly helpful at the time) was last posted in May of last year !!

As for being 'incredibly unhelpful', it's true that in this particular instance 'Kyrax' wasn't his usual 'helpful' self ....

However when this forum was gaining momentum and 'fame' for being the place to visit for Theme and Extension developments 'Kyrax' was way out there with his contributions and enthusiasm and helping to make this forum the success that it is today...

Default StayFocused addon does the trick

You can effectively block websites in Chrome using the StayFocused extension. It can easily be disabled, so it's useful to keep honest people from temptation.https://chrome.google.com/webstore/d...gcngdelahlfoji
