So I made a javascript code that generates a url to download something. How can I get chrome to download this?

I can get it to work by telling chrome to create a new tab and then setting that tab's url to the url of the thing to be downloaded, but then I'm left with a left over blank tab.

Is there a way to do this without the tab work? If not, how can I delete this tab once it has served its purpose?
