My plugin was displaying the html file specified within manifest.json. I wanted to add some php to the html page and subsequently renamed the page with a .php extension and hosted the folder with xampp.

Problem: The page no longer is displayed when I click the plugin. I only see a small blank popup.

The page loads fine if I load it via the web browser and the PHP works fine also. My current .json file specified "popup" as the type.

Does php work with chrome plugins or is there another parameter other than "popup" that would allow me to load a .php file when my button is clicked?
