When I open up a new window in Google Chrome I get the Additional Plug-in required tab.

So I try and down load it and I get a pop-up window that has this message in it:

"Error opening file for writing"

c:\windows\syste32\macromed\flash\NPSWF32.dll

Click abort to stop the installation,
Retry to try again, or
Ignore to skip this file.

If I ignore then the Flash Player upgrade doesn't work properly.

Any ideas on how to sort it out the simple way for someone who isn't exactly overly computer literate?

You probably don't have permission to write to that file.
If you are administrator on your PC, you can read this and it will explain how to take ownership of that file, and allow you to write to it.
It's basically just in the How to take ownership of a file section.
