Cool, I like the idea of customised functionality and might keep trying with these user scripts and extensions, I was a little confused that the youtube downloader was getting such rave reviews, so it obviously works for some people (unless it's just the extension that was working).

This probably further exposes my ignorance but is the dev version of chrome more vulnerable to attacks than the stable version?

It should be the opposite, the dev version integrate all the new features, including security ones, unfortunatly is not as stable as the 'stable version', meaning that it crashes once a while.

( last build crash really often :/ )

It's not YouTube that changed something, it's that unsafeWindow was disabled (and therefor page access by User Scripts).
