Google Chrome Blocks Local Extensions!

by Sagnik Roy on May 28, 2014

Google began wiping out local Chrome extensions and plug-ins with an aim of making it a faster and much more secure web browser. This means, as of today, only the extensions and plug-ins available in the Chrome web store can be installed. Google says they are doing this to protect users from malware. Easily accessible and downloadable plug-ins in random websites can easily mask malicious software. This policy change was initially announced in November 2013, which was to take effect with the release of Chrome 33 in January this year. Google has finally flipped this switch with the launch of Chrome 35 last week.

This new policy will not alter anything for the Dev and Canary channels for Windows. Also, it won’t affect Mac, Linux and Chrome OS users. Some more detail about this has been shared in the FAQ page.

  • Users can install only those extensions which are hosted in the Chrome Web Store. This limitation however does not apply to the developer mode or the enterprise policy.
  • Extensions which were previously installed but are not hosted on Chrome Web Store will also be disabled permanently. Users can’t enable these extensions anymore.

We are hoping that with this policy, Google will have a stronger security to offer and the number of malicious files and software being transmitted to user will be kept in a check.

Due to this policy, I will no longer be using Chrome as my browser of choice. This policy opens up far too many holes in the security grey area where proprietary software becomes forced. I will never use any cloud services, nor will I be forced into accepting them by corporations attempting censorship by omission of alternatives.

Superb website you have here but I was wondering if you knew of any message boards that cover the same topics talked about here? I’d really love to be a part of group where I can get feedback from other experienced people that share the same interest. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. Cheers!
