Chrome Gestures: Google Chrome Mouse Gestures Extension

by Chrome Blog on July 16, 2009

I made a post sometime back where i invited general users to request what plugin they want for chrome, and many users wanted mouse gestures for chrome. We already had Mouse Gesture Userscript which many were using, but not in extension format.

Kyrax, our senior member of the forum did gave it a try and release a beta version of Mouse Gestures on our forum, and after weeks of testing and improvements, finally released a usable version of ChromeGestures extension.

Installation And Support

I have not provided any information on the working of this extension over here as you can see. For all your queries and for support please refer to the Chrome Gestures Thread. The support thread would be regularly updated by the developer with latest versions and upgrades and all the troubleshooting would be taken care off from that thread.

Please Note: This extension is only for the developer builds of google chrome, and not supported by Stable and Beta versions.

Why only for chrome developper version ? Alas !

4 Chromer 07.17.09 at 12:33 am

Why only for chrome developer version ?
Please, do it for stable version !

Thank you
(sorry for double post)

5 Chrome Blog 07.17.09 at 12:41 am

@Chromer, the reason why this is only for developer version is because only developer version of chrome supports the extensions. Its not available for stable or beta channels as of yet!

6 Kyrax 07.17.09 at 4:03 pm

As soon as the stable version supports extensions, you will be able to use it.

I suggest you give the dev channel a try. It is very stable and it allows you to play around with various cool new features !

7 Chromer 07.19.09 at 11:16 am

OK, do the tow versions of chrome, dev channel and current stable (2.0.172) versions cohabit well ?
In other word, could one install the tow versions of chrome without problem ?

The User Script is intended for Stable and Beta use, however, it does not have options functionality and will not have Chrome API support when we implement that.

I can’t get the extension installed on (21225).
After the download I get this error:
Could not install from "local path". Invalid value for 'content_scripts[0].matches[0]'

10 Waha 07.21.09 at 10:44 pm

You seem to be using Chromium. They’ve taken out “chrome://*/” matches in that version, invalidating any extension that uses that.
Sorry but until that syncs with regular Chrome and we’re forced to fix it, we can’t really help.

11 Josh 07.23.09 at 7:46 am

I am using the latest dev build of chrome and getting the same error that Night Ranger is reporting.

12 Josh 07.23.09 at 10:16 am

I’m using version by the way.

13 Eric 07.23.09 at 11:39 am

Can’t you just remove “chrome://*/*” from your manifest.json file? I, like Josh, am using v3.0.195.1 of Chrome (not Chronium).

14 Eric 07.23.09 at 12:14 pm

Okay, I realize this is a bit of a rigged solution, but I got it to work. Essentially, I hijacked an installed extension — this is because I need Chrome to generate an ID and a Key for me. So, here we go…

1. Install an extension, any will do. I did it with Gmail Checker

2. Navigate to the Chrome Extension folder (here’s the link for XP users)
C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions

3. You should see at least one folder. The name of the folder is the internal ID that Chrome assigns to the extension. Open the folder.

4. You’ll see a folder and a file. The file is called “Current Version” and the folder is the name of the version. Open the folder.

5. The contents of this folder are what we’re after. Copy the “manifest.json” file to your desktop and delete the rest of the files — the folder should now be empty. This will be the folder we copy the new files into in step 7. We’ll use the “manifest.json” file in step 8.

6. Find and change the extension of the “ChromeGestures.crx” file to be “.rar”. (Note: You’ll need WinRAR and you can get it) Open the newly renamed “ChromeGestures.rar” file.

7. Inside you should see 15 files. Copy those to the Chrome Extension folder that we’re hijacking — the folder we deleted the contents of in step 5. Open the “manifest.json” file with a text editor (Notepad, Wordpad, whatever).

8. Remember the “manifest.json” file you copied to your desktop in step 5? Open it with a text editor too. Find the line …
“key”: “(LONG string of characters)”
… and copy it.

9. Now, in the ChomeGesture’s “manifest.json” file, paste in the “key” line that you copied in step 8. I pasted it just below the “description” line, but I don’t think it matters.

10. Finally, find the line …
“matches”: [ “chrome://*/*”, “http://*/*”, “https://*/*” ],
… and delete the “chrome://*/*” part. It should look like this …
“matches”: [ “http://*/*”, “https://*/*” ],

Restart Chrome and you should be set to go!

Basically, it looks like Chrome keeps track of the Extensions by assigning them an ID number and associating it with a Key. Since the “manifest.json” file is where Chrome pulls the information about the Extensions from, the only thing I needed was a proper ID and Key combination. You’ll see that Chrome correctly associates the hijacked ID with ChromeGestures. So, whatever Extension was hijacked in the first place can be reinstalled without consequence.

Hope that helps!

Okay, I didn’t really like the method I just posted, so I dug a bit deeper.

Take the ChromeGesture.cfx file and change it to a .rar file. Extract the contents of that to a folder — e.g. c:\ChromeGestures)

Then edit the “manifest.json” file by just deleting the chrome://*/* part and repackage the folder as it’s own cfx file using the guide here:

Even though it looked like the hijacked extension workaround would be okay, it turns out that you aren’t able to reinstall the hijacked extension. (opps) Anyhow, this fixes it and it works fine. (Sorry for the plethora of posts …)

I don’t know if I’m just doing something wrong or there’s something wrong with the latest chromium, but I can’t get it to install after following your instructions. I just goes straight to saving the file, but it at least tried to install the unedited version of this extension.

Which version are you using?

aaarrrgg I’m dying without mouse gestures!
I feel like I’m using an apple system… so restricted/retarded 🙁

19 emmanuel 08.09.09 at 10:07 pm

those are complicated, you should make like Opera, real easy to use, refresh is just up and down, everything only in two move or just one

20 megha 08.18.09 at 2:23 pm

Hey has nyone succeeded working wid it on version yet?
m still nt able to work dat out! If sumone cn help?

21 Arsh 08.19.09 at 7:50 am

I appreciate the effort you’ve put into trying to fix this, man. I really do.

But would it not be simpler to just upload your corrected file to a free file host or something and let people download and use that file to replace the file? Maybe I don’t understand it.
I tried to do your fix but kept getting that the .rar wasn’t a valid rar file when I tried to change the file to that extension and extract it. Dunno why.

Anyway Here’s hoping this works… and since I can’t see all the gestures without getting it successfully installed, here’s hoping there’s a zoom image gesture because that’s all I’m really here for.

22 Arsh 08.19.09 at 9:49 am

FYI: I’m still getting this in Dev 4:

Extension Install Error
Invalid value for ‘content_scripts[0].matches[0]’.

The last time I checked, Google’s “packaging” was doing nasty things to archives – injecting bytes on the top level that they “hope” archivers will keep skipping forever, instead of adding their stuff to the comment or extra file. This is general Google-Chrome MO no matter which archive format they reverse and hack. So, things can break if you don’t use official archiver or if you use substantially older version.

Hi guys, I really need this extension… is the only thing is keeping me linked to firefox at the moment. I think this type of feature should added in a native way inside chrome, as Opera do. or the best thing ever, to have compatibility between firefox and chrome. Why to rewrite all the extensions if someone did it already??
Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee 😀

Today, I went to the beach with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it
to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her ear
and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear.
She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is totally off topic but I had to tell someone!
